As some have seen, I have a very open exhaust. I have pulled carbs and cleaned and installed 38 pj's. Also new after market needles. Set mixture screw at 2 1/4. Was running very rich. Then set them at 1 3/4. Running great but still think a tad to rich. Thinking about going to 1 1/2. I also have K&N filter. How do you know if its to lean? Not enough power/fuel? I do still get a little popping and or back fire on decal.

You can check your plugs , but I could smell mine and also at start, White smoke at exhaust. Also when I adjusted the mixture screw I had fuel in the intake rubbers when I removed them to make the adjustment. ( Yes I know you don't have to remove them, but I have big hands and I wanted to get it accurate.

See, I didn't want to disappoint you.  Grin  Re. the plugs, they'll be white if running too lean, sooty if too rich. Check the plugs before doing any more adjusting.

insulators only change color if pig rich or aftermarket fuel additives due to ethanol fuel. My insulators are always white, with maybe a very, vert lite tan only in certain areas, and I just dyno'd with 4 gas analyser and at idle and midrange it was where it is suppose to be.
I've found example #2 applies for idle and timing marks.

These monster tend to run rich, and, with 38s I think you would really have to work at it to get it too lean.  I don't think it would hurt to set the pilots at 1.5 turns if you want.  That doesn't take much too try it and if you don't like it its easy to fix. Its only time. With the exhaust as open as yours is I think it would be hard to eliminate all decel popping.

With your exhaust, you are going to get subjected to more exhaust smell than someone with more normal pipes.

That's basically all gone now that I turned them from 2 1/4 to 1 3/4

When I switched to 38 slow jets, removal of the K & N pre-filter seemed to balance things out nicely for me.  However, I'm running stock exhaust - so your mileage may obviously vary.  Terry

Fuel/air mixture screw. Its on the carburetor, upside down, "D" shaped and directly behind the intake tube.
