OK so I am going to be replacing my spark pplug leads with 8mm leads in Red and was trying to figure out the boot side connection whether it needed a 5k ohm resistor or not. Then I came across this article on a BMW site still not sure if its needed or not but its a good read about sparkplugs.

So what I am going to do is order the sparkplug boots from NGK with the 5kohm resister in it and then replace all the cables to the coils and spark plugs seeing as the bike is 16 years old and I suspect the plug wires have never been changed. I am in the process of replacing all visible rubber components as the shelf life is way beyond what it should be. The boot connector on the coil end is 180 but what type is it?

Thanks

are u changing for looks and/or performance or because they are old?  Old?, did u test them for resistance? OEM last almost forever! Honda maintenance chart/service manual has nothing about changing them out for any reason.
They are solid core wires, reason for the resistor in the boot. using non-solid core wires no resistor needed. Solid core do not wear out, only the resistor might, which is very, very rare. Too much resistance, results in low power and/or fouled plugs, poor MPG. TOO low resistance causes other serious problems.
did u read the thread RD posted? did u go to magnecore site? did u see my posts?
These are the same plug wires used by Honda's Flagship bike the Goldwing GL1500, designed to run 100ks of miles.

Just so you understand I am changing them out because of Shelflife Rubber no matter what Kind has a shelf life and  the more its exposed to the elements and high voltage the shorter the shelf life, ALSO changing them because technology has changed dramatically since they were installed so time for change and While im at it I might as well do them for the bling effect inother words make em pretty.
I dont know any manufacturer that tells you when to change the sparkplug wires but I can gaurantee they change them when they are suspect. Checking the resistance is a the first step but it doesnt check the insulation in order to do that you have to use technology that is available to most manufacturers not to mechanics so the simpiest thing to do is just change them after about 10-20 years and be proactive. Thats what I am doing being proactive. doesnt mean everyone has to do it but I am. Cheesy

go to the magnecore site. there is NO new technology for plug wires. The only new tech was to do away with wires altogether, with coil on plug. They are all still silicone insulated outer shell, not rubber.
do the glow test. run the bike in a darkened garage at night. no glow to wires they are fine. these are not 1960-70s construction spark plug wires living under high underhood temperatures.
or have the bike running and have your favorite neighbor and/or brother in-law grab a wire, while upping the RPMs, no shock, the wires are still good.
doing it for the bling  cooldude still read the magnecore site so as not to buy ultra low resistance plug wires which do nothing for performance and can over time cause damage to the ignition system.

Good Luck
