I have had a noise for some time now (BANGING SOUND), when shifting gears and you let the clutch out. Was noticably louder as time went. I read here, while trying to figure it out, that the rear wheel bearings were sometimes a problem causing a noise that could have been the problem.. Just changed them out, (at a shop), as I am not at my house, so limited tools to inspect myself. Got the bike back and took it for a day ride.  I left and intersection, and noticed a skip in the rear wheel spline housing, then another, ...... and within a mile, the the pinion gear on the driveshaft seems to completely loose drive in the rear housing unit with a complete loss of engagement. I had the bike towed back to my Dad's house.
Now having read that there is required maintenance, that I didn't do.... my question is this.  I need to fly out of here in a day, so I won't be able to tear down the rear unit and see what failed. Knowing that I will need to buy some used parts, like a drive shaft etc. What am I going to find. Is is the drive shaft pinion teeth that fail, or the spline gear in the rear drive Unit?
Or both. I would like when I return, to already have whatever parts I might need, as thing to find them through one of us selling them would be valuable time lost, when I come back to repair it,
Thanks Jack

Sounds like drive shaft and pinion cup.  Less than $100 in parts, fix it yourself and you will know it's right

It is possible that if grease has not maintained that the drive splines are toast as well but you really won't know till you take it apart.

As far as parts, a used final drive with its flange is the way to go if the drive splines are gone.  But drive shaft and pinion cup get new, they are not that much.

Try Honda direct line or pro caliber

Thanks, I see a couple shafts here on the classifieds. I crossed the country in the spring and noticed the noise, but couldn't identify the sound I was hearing, and got distracted with the post on rear wheel bearing failures. So after changing out the bearings ( which turned out to be good), I knew I still had a problem. I am really surprised at how fast it all happened, as within a quarter mile, I had a complete loss of drive. Being as gentle as I could, I still had to limp down the road to a gas station, and I could here the shaft slipping, so am assuming that the driveline will  be toast. Thanks for your input.

Careful on buying used drive shaft online,,,,,,the prices are 50-100% MORE than a new one....
check this link for both parts:

Not only drive shafts, but all used parts. Some are asking so close to the price of new, why buy it?

Just do your home work, I remember a stripper in FL asking $25 for a used OEM air filter.

If that includes watching her install it for you, it might be worth it, depending on the cleanness of the filter, of course.  angel

Yes, thanks. I see the parts are still readily available, so new shaft and pinion, have been ordered and shipped.
Any links available to school up on the teardown of R&R of the shaft. I would like to read up on it prior to flying back again to save time and get her back on the road

A good impact wrench is the easiest way to remove the pinion nut.  If you don't have one it can be done by holding the drive flange in the final drive and a good socket and a breaker bar. Good luck it anit hard

A write up in shop talk. Either jor the rear wheel only or the whole rear drive.

YouTube has a video for the wheel removable.

shipping costs have gone up. oil changes are more expensive and trucks get less mpg both due to the EPA.
And UPS and FEDx still charge the fuel surcharge from when oil  was over $100/barrel.
