Would anyone care to recommend a good quality throttle lock for a 98 Valk? I don't need a cruise control, just a simple, dependable throttle lock to give my hand a break every now and then on a long ride. Thanks,

I use the Vista Cruise Lock.

Low cost, relatively easy to install, lasts for years, and is easy to operate.

Brake-away.  I put it on all 4 of my Valkyries and the Magna.  No it's not cheap.  But the quality is so far beyond everything else.  I used to use Vista Cruise.  The Brake-away is nearly 10 times as much. Machined from aircraft aluminum, it exudes quality.  It looks so much nicer, and works so much better...
The sting of poor quality is felt long after the victory of low price is forgotten.

I bought chrome grips and the Vista Cruise will not fit.  If you have some brands of aftermarket grips the Vista Crusise will not work.

MADCO Cam Lock

Like the Brake-Away, it's not cheap ($130) but it looks professional.

I bought a BrakeAway for my VZ800 Marauder in 2012 because I really liked how it looked.  I don't like it.  Never could get it adjusted so it will engage easily in the summer and not slip in the winter.
Guess I'm one of the few however.
That being said, the guy who sells them has offered to help me by phone step-by-step.  Though that was years ago and I never did do that.  Maybe I will go back and try adjusting it yet again...
THAT being said I also think they made improvements to it since then.
My IS has a Vista Cruise (installed before I bought the bike), and I'm happier with that one.  It also tends to slip when the temps go down, but when I try to snug it up it tends to make my throttle stick (when disengaged).
So I guess I'm just really not a happy camper am I.
No - wait - I DO like my Kuryakyn cramp buster!

I got one of these, because, chrome. It works well enough for me, but then, I don't use it for more than about 30 seconds at a time, to flex my hand and wrist.

I have had a Break Away throttle lock on my I/S for years and like it.  However, purchased a standard last winter that has a Throttlemeister throttle lock on it and it works well with the OEM grips that came on the bike. Might want to take a look at these.  They look pretty sharp on the bike.

The expensive ones look nice, however I have no experience with them.

I have been using the Vista-Cruise for over ten years and it has always done what I needed for it to do. Don't know how it could have been improved.

I use it with Kuryakin grips. It was installed a long time ago and the best I remember I had to trim the rubber part with a razor knife to make it work. cooldude

Nobody has ever said, "Boy that throttle lock sure looks ugly". Grin

If your talking about the Kuryakyn grips, you need to send an e-mail to Vista Cruise at mail@soundoffrec.com and they'll send you a spacer made for that application.

I just installed a new Vista Cruise on one of my bikes with the Kury grips and once I got the correct spacer, it works great.

I under stand the thought process about quality products, but to me, sometimes the extra cost is not worth the extra quality.

The Break away looks like a quality product, but at a c-note more than the Vista, that works well above the needs I have, can't see the extra $$$.

I have a Vista's on 4 of my bikes, it does the job, very well too.  My first one is over 10-12 years old and still work great.

I only use it for short time spans, not as a cruise control.

I agree.  The oats are cheaper after they've been through the horse. (You get what you pay for.) Or as Oskar Schindler put it (in the sanctuary scene) "Nice things cost money."  If you're happy with the product and it looks good enough for you then you're the one whose needs you satisfy, no one else.  Unless yours is a show bike - then there's others judging it that matter if you want the trophy. That might be the only exception.  In my case, there was also the wife.  Unhappy with the Vista Cruise on her bike, but pleased with the Brake Away.  It just works better. Assuming you read the manual on how to set it up.  Mine never get out of calibration, but they have that covered too.  And BTW, looks much better too.

Chevy, Cadillac.

Free market, free choice.   To judge someone on their free choice does a disservice to the privilege of having that option.

I have a throttle lock, unknown brand (but I could take a picture), and I can't seem to get it adjusted right. When activated, the throttle slowly slips, and speed drops.

If I tighten it to where it seems to no longer slip, then it's too tight.

Mostly just use it for giving my throttle hand a few minutes brake, usually along a level section of Hwy.

I used to prefer the Throttle Rocker, allows the grip to be loosened, and the open fingers resting on the grip, and hold the throttle in position with your wrist. Loved the cruise control on the GW. Will be looking at it for the Valkyrie sometime in the future.

Back in the day I used the cheap plastic throttle locks (7/8 bars) and they were awesome!  They worked great and I probably logged a 1/4 million miles using those things on Metric bikes (been riding now for 35 years).  If they made one for the 1" bars I'd be using them.

They do. I have one on my Standard. I got it at the Laughlin River Run a few years back. It works great. I will try to find a link for you.

Falcon...

I too had used and liked the Vista Cruise 7/8" ones for the older wings.... I also had the same one on my 83 CB900 before my 85 Wing... Been using that one type for 20 years

I was disappointed that they didn't make one for the Valk with 1" bars.... Didn't like the Vista Cruise with the extra bar and other stuff... wanted the nice plastic one that fit between the Grip and control housing... nice and clean and always worked well.

But then I had an idea... get the 7/8" one and ream it out with a Dremel tool and round it out with thin sand paper around the 1" handle bar (be careful you don't take too much out-dont lock it down all the way- or you have to get a new one..LOL) and presto, the cheap Wing one works well for the Valk.. Have had mine for 6 years and still works great... and you barely see it there.

I did it when I added the Kury Grips. it does need a little extra space..

Here it is on Bike bandit for 25.95 plus shipping....

You could probably just ream it out with some sandpaper on the bars or a 1" dowel... just loosen the screw up and be careful...

What I liked is that you barely se its there and work with the touch of a thumb....

Hell maybe if there enough interest, I'll modify a few of em and sell em back to y'all- at  slight markup of course...... LOL

I had the Kuryakyn version and never really liked how it performed. I just use the Throttle Boss with the Kury grips. I like the Brake Away concept but for $200 and some time installing one can have a Audiovox electronic setup that performs flawlessly.

That's true.  Wouldn't mind having one of those myself.  Esp after I get rid of the wing.  At times a throttle lock is just faster to use, and other times the true cruise control is better.  Not so good if you are on a group ride unless you are leading.  Then it's great for everyone else - steady speed means less yo-yo effect back in the pack.
