I'm hooking up cell phone and would like to get 12v from up front near headlight. I'll then transform it to 5v USB. Has anyone opened up headlight wiring?

Coming out of the keyed ignition switch are 3 wires.  red is 12 v positive all the time.  Black goes to the fan circuit and green is 12 positive when the switch is on.  Just remove the gas cap cover to access.  There is a quick disconnect under the cover.  No need to remove the switch.

There is an OEM kit for a 12v plug in under the seat, I don't know what they were thinking, you would have to pull the side cover to plug in your devise for charging, makes no sense. I matched up by eye the plug under the seat at cycleterminal.com and ran the wire under tank to handlebar. You can just cut the OEM plug off and splice but I hate to hack a wire harness on a brand new bike.

Cycle Terminal has just about any electrical plug for any motorcycle. I don't have the part number but their pictures are easy to match what you need, usually its the male end you need. You get the plastic blank and crimp on connector, stick the wire through the blank, crimp on metal connector and pull to lock into blank. Might cost 10 bucks to do this.

You wouldn't have to pull the cover every time, just plug in a charger then run the wire to your trunk/bags.
