There are a couple of bolts under the tree which could hold a home-made bracket. Four inch lights under the fairing are going to hit the fender, two inches might be OK, maybe. Fork travel is something like 3.5 inches. The new smaller super bright LEDs are probably the way to go.
I think extra lights on an interstate should not be so close to the headlight that oncoming traffic just sees one big light. Better to put them on the engine guards (high or low, but not outboard of a tip-over), or calipers. The safety of extra lights well away from the headlights is well documented (the magic triangle).
I always wanted pod lights, but refused to pay the high prices, and the fogs in them were never very bright.
I have Motolights on the calipers and PIAA1100Xs on the fork wings. Long before LEDs got good.
If you just want more light, I have been running Hella 80/100 H4 halogen off roads for years with no heat or wiring problems of any kind. The fairing breathes very well, unlike the bucket on std/toureres.
