I have an IS tank, standard gas cap

It has a second coat of paint, which may mean the cap assembly sits a bit high. Anyway it has been fine a few years and last few months started smelling. I think it is from the cap- not the pingle/carb's Etc. The vaccuum line from Pingle to carb does smell a bit of fumes. I ground off some paint under the cap to get it to sit lower- seemed to help maybe.

I read about vaseline on gasket. Does it work without harming the gasket?- vaseline melts rubber, but I guess so would gasoline.
I was thinking of putting a thin film of liquid silicone gasket maker on the tank side. (? bad idea?)

I would first change out the large o-ring on the tank side and then if that does not fix it ,change the cap assy.

[If you're sure the vent line is connected correctly, then try the vasoline-I did on my I/S years ago and solved it.If that or gasket replacement doesn't rid you of smell, it could be the cap itself.I believe there was a recall on the gas cap-fumes were escaping from the lock itself-try vasoline first.quote author=Hondasan link=topic=9111.msg71565#msg71565 date=1254613496]

can you  get a replacement gasket for the cap? I went to the dealer and the only part listed was the whole cap assembly ($62)
I'll check on the recall !

Some have fixed the cap smell by cutting a secondary gasket from an old inner tube or similar rubber and then doubling up on the OEM gasket.
Apparently it solved their fumy problem. Cheap and quick too.

I am 100% sure that was a bad idea.

Here is what I did.
The gasket on the cap is donut shaped.
Take the gasket off of the cap
Make a donut shaped gasket shim out of some 1/32" gasket material
Put the shim inside the OEM gasket
Put the gasket back on with the new shim inside. This will take some patience.
It may be a little stiff to close but it will get better with some time.
I did this 6 years ago and it solved the problem.

Search "gas Cap" you'll find some reading

I added a thin layer of silicone gasket material to the tank lip. smoothed it with my finger, the placed a circular peice of wax paper on it and put cap down, but not snapped in- to shape it-
Left cap open for a few hours to allow it to set, then closed cap shut on wax paper. I left it over night to cure
I now have a thin gasket and the rubber cap snugs to it well
No more smell

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have always been told that silicone and gasoline are a bad mix. The fuel will deteriorate the silicone and it will ball up and not adhere. Granted, some may enter the tank, but probably not enough to clog up the filters. I do know that I have seen silicone used by carbs and it caused major issues. Just my 2 cents.

it is a gasket material for engines- says OK on label
I'll keep an eye out for deterioration

Occasionally on very hot days after my Valkyrie has been sitting in the sun, I get a strong smell of gasoline rising up to my nostrils. I attribute that to the rapidly evaporation taking place inside the gas tank and think nothing more about it.  Also sometimes when I'm passing a gas station I get the same strong smell and immediately think it's my bike.  I usually then reconsider noticing the gas station and ride on without another thought.

Just sayin'
