Had a nasty fall in the garage Tues. evening, landed hard on the right wrist....worst pain I've experienced in a long time. Hand was swollen nearly 3x normal size, dr. took xrays and said nothing broken but wasn't certain in one area due to swelling. No sleep for last three nights, right hand totally useless most of the time. I finally called the surgeon's office and cancelled the hip surgery until further notice. Got a bruised butt, jammed left elbow and left shoulder jammed from that. The oxycodone didn't faze the pain, really frustrating. Typing with one hand and a finger is bad enough, try feeding yourself, brushing your teeth(what a mess that was), and when using the commode....try using the other hand once. Rita has threatened to duct tape me to a chair for the next few weeks....or shoot me.....or both. Said she hasn't decided yet. I was just looking forward to being able to get out of bed and not having any pain. Guess I'll have to wait a little longer.

Damnit John hate to hear this news. But you will need both hands for a couple of days after your replacement. Keep your chin pointed up my friend

I t's sad to hear this John. But as mentioned you will want to have both hands in working order.
In 09 I dislocated my right shoulder and tore several tendons. They put in 3 screws to re attach them. It was quite a chore learning to use my left hand . Even the simplest task were hard to complete. I hope they do not find any breaks and the swelling/pain diminish quickly. Keeping ya'll in prayers.

Sorry to hear that, John. That must really be painful. Among many crappy things of older age is the downgrading of balance. Couple that with bad hips, bad knees, etc , and we all become klutz's.
Darn!

That sucks John! Sometimes we wonder why these things happen? Weather good or bad maybe some day we will know, in the meanwhile keep the faith and take care of yourself! Know that God is still in control, you'll be in my prayers for a quick recovery for this and your hip procedure!

Saturday morning & the wrist and hand is much improved. Still one bad spot just above the wrist bone, might go have it xrayed again since it was quite swollen Wednesday which can mask broken bones. Still wearing a brace, can't move the hand without pain.
I finally figured out what caused this whole thing.....ME! No surprise there. I had just folded a small step ladder and leaned it against Rita's transport chair which was also folded. Judging by the chair's position after the fall, it had started to roll back toward me but I didn't see it. I turned to walk away and caught my bad leg/foot(the bad hip side) on the ladder which I recall now was slowly sliding down. That tripped me up(or down) and down I went with nothing to grab onto. My foot was so entangled it was impossible to gain my balance in the 1-2 seconds this all took to happen.
Found out this morning when Rita was talking to her daughter in West Palm, her granddaughter overheard her mom talking about my episode. She got real upset, started to cry wondering if "grandpa John" was OK. She wasn't happy until I got on the phone and talked to her. She's quite the little gal, when they come up to visit she's like my shadow.

I went to take the garbage out, real simple task...right? She told me to go out the back door, do NOT go out through the garage. Sheesh...can't get a break!

Sorry to hear John. Glad the swelling has gone down. Pappy's post reminds me of Red Green's closing line on his show. " If the women don't find you handsome, make sure they find you handy." I know it doesn't actually apply but it just surfaced in my twisted mind.

She knows you too well, through the garage, you would find some thing to work on. Hope you recover soon so you can get on with the surgery and get that behind you.

John I have been sHooting x Rays for many years and swelling will not mask or hide a fracture on film ( don't know what DR told you that but not true). You can however have a fracture that is so slight that it can't be seen until healing ( osteogenesis ) starts to form new bone. All will work itself out and you will get a new hip soon

Got it rescheduled for Nov. 30, earliest date available. Great, maybe I can ride over to eat pizza now. I'll probably ask forgiveness rather than permission.

Sorry to hear about your fall John. Hope the wrist heals quickly and all turns out well for you. I appreciate your problems using the left hand for right hand task. Been there. Right shoulder operation.

Hey old friend, long time no see. The wrist is healing nicely, still a bit tender in spots but most of the technicolor shades are gone.
