Got off work today and went to fire it up and the light came on with the key like normal. Then I am almost positive that I hit the start button and all went dark...if it went dark with the button press...that mean starter button correct?

Thanks in advance, I have my little emergency kit packed up to work on it at lunch and after work.

Are you saying the headlight went out completely?  The headlight is supposed to dim when the starter button is hit.

I have no headlight, I was able to check the 30 amp fuse and it is good...I think before I take anything apart I will make sure the battery is tight...I just went right to the starter switch

Now that I think , when the starter relay is bad the light will be on and when it goes off to start...it wont start but the light will come back on after the button is released

You suspect the relay is bad?  You should hear it "click" when you hit the start button, if not, you should check for continuity.

As a mechanic, I've found 90%  of starting problems are battery connections. Even if they look good, and are tight, take them off an clean. happened to me on a new cb450.

Randy,

Thanks and I hope that's the case.

Will have to come up with some way to get the bike home. Hmmm, is this because we may be cosidering a new motorcycle...

Mine died at a Wal-Mart store after a 3 mile ride last year. My sister stopped by after I called her and I jumped off her car battery. Rode it home and did a complete charge on the battery. I've checked it daily for a year and the charge is full, rode it 11k miles last year. The battery was 2 years old 2015.

Tony,, wiggle that connector on the relay, see if that gives you power to get home.

Just to clarify - the power for the headlamp goes through the start button, on a second set of contacts that open when the button is pressed. It is not uncommon for those contacts to become intermittent; mine did, so I took the switch apart and cleaned it. While not directly related to the failure to start, it is a dual-function switch, and when grimy inside, both switches can fail.

When checking battery connections, don't forget the negative cable to the engine case. It can become corroded because of its location, and will cause starting and running problems.

I jumped it with her Subie, idled for a few minutes while I put my gear on, rode it home 9 miles and when I tried to restart it, it just clicked. Is that a far enough ride to charge it

These batteries have died their first year.  Do you know your charging system ? I would put a full charge into the battery and still carry some jumper cables until I knew the real condition of the battery and charging system.

No it's not, a battery charger is for charging and as previously stated you should check your battery terminals.
Mine did the exact same thing and it turned out that the negative cable was no longer tight on the battery although it "looked" like it was.

Well, you most likely have your problem, dead battery.

Now to find the fix. Could be the battery, connections, or the charging system.

Start the bike, and put a volt meter on the battery while running. Idle, and over 1500 rpm. Let us know. If you get no change, try the alternator, without blowing something, be careful.

It could be the 55A wishbone fuse. No charge to battery.

Glad you got her going. Make sure you give that new battery a full charge.
