I want to install a pingel valve on a Interstate tank. Do I have to remove tank or can it be done on frame? Also any suggestions or is it pretty straight forward.  Thanks

To do it right pull the tank.  Not a big thing. 3 hoses, the screw inside the petcock knob, front and rear tank bolts. Siphon the gas out first to get the weight down.  A really long needle nose pliar helps.

I wouldn't worry about siphoning, just ride a bit so it's half a tank or so
Don't forget to unplug the sending unit wire, it's smack in the center under the tank

Thanks for the info guys, figure I'll put one of those in. Sounds like to many possible problems with the stock petcock.

Not really. 180,000 miles on 2 bikes with stock petcocks. If you do switch, remember to turn it off EVERY time. Or put a DanMarc on.

All of mine have Pingels and DanMarcs except George which has a single carb - Pingel only.  I JB welded a handle extension that projects straight down to make the lever easier to find.

ugh. orginal cost me a tooth on the starter

the rebuild kit- OEM, lasted about 1500 miles..

the FULL rebuild kit, also OEM, it too, lasted about 2000 miles...

well, now, I ordered a full petcock, again, OEM....it lasted about 2000 miles, and now it leaks...

wtf....noticed after I put 'er away....mind you this ALL happened this year.
I guess its time for this pingel thing..ffs...been an expensive tour of duty...
NEVER had a problem with any other honda, or any other bike...ever

Different experiences; different riders.  My OEM has lasted over 190,000 miles. I wonder what makes the difference.

It's such a freaking game, some have gone forever without a hydrolock, others have seen & felt the damage. Those that have gone forever are lucky dogs.. Some time bk i had one of my Valks lock up. I used the bike all the time, ran absolutely great, no signs of any problems. One day after riding I let it sit for an hour or so, gave it a washing, went to start it & that was it.. After pulling the engine & replacing the starter gear, which I still have the sheared off gear hanging in my shop to remind me, I always shut off the fuel supply.  Replacing the OEM parts valve with a Pingel is a little cheap Insurance for me with a mechanical valve. Just to much dirt/sediment can screw up the original valve in my opinion. I've been on a goldwing for a bunch of years & still enjoy it. I picked up a Really nice & clean 01 interstate with 22k on it. Will end up super valking soon. Feels real good to be back on the Phat lady again!!
The black one in pic was the one I had problem with..

i. have. no. idea.

but it  IS one of "those" things

as rare as these scooters are, there is one in my town, 65K pop and half hour away from a 'big' city (cleveland)
he bought his new, and modified the oem to have a lever that stick out the RIGHT side, converted to manual...clever monkey
the only real and its real, problem with manual is turning it off every flipping time
it WOULD be nice if the manual aftermarket ones had the turnkey stick out the right side, so nice and visible when bike is parked, leaning over

I rebuilt the OEM and added the Dan Marc when desmogging a while back.  I have read that even with the gas shut off every time that there is enough fuel in the gas line to cause a hydrolock, if all the stars line up.

I only have about 25,000 on my 98, but so far so good.  I try and remember to blip the starter button before firing up, but admit that I often forget.

(I see the OP is in Medina.  I am from Akron originally.  Just put the Valk up for the current cold snap we are experiencing in Cincinnati.  Road New Years Day for a while.  Big difference in climate in a couple of hundred miles down I-71.  In the last three years, I don't think it was more that two weeks without riding, at least for a little.  Sorry, did not mean to hijack the thread.  Just thinking of Northeastern Ohio....)
