Yesterday I decided to spring for a heated jacket liner, gloves, and controller. I left the cycle shop and headed home and about 3/4 of a mile from home the bike died and the battery was dead.  None of my buddies were anywhere close and I called the bike shop and one of the owners came out and jumped the battery and then followed me home. (Talk about GREAT service).  I charged the battery overnight and then drove it back to the cycle shop this morning hoping to get new brushes in it and be on my way. As luck would have it the armature was bad and I had to buy a new alternator.  They did put on a new Goldwing alternator (Had to clock it to a different position) and I am back on the road again. It's been an expensive week so far.  I did get the old alternator back so I can have it rebuilt after I recuperate from the past two days.

He found it 2 hours away, I went with him to pick it up.  We got about 10 blocks away from the guys house and the right wheel bearing went out.  He was pretty upset about not getting even part way home with it.
My thought was that at least we weren't on I-10 doing 65 when it went out.  We called the previous owner and left it in a bank parking lot until his son came out the next day and repaired it and then met my son half way home with the boat/trailer.
Moral is that it could have been worse and the service your received was uncommon.
I had a friend that had his alternator rebuilt and it lasted about a month.  The Gold Wing unit that we installed is still running about a year later.
