I have a starting problem with my Std. When it gets cold (35-40 degrees F) the bike fires up momentarily and dies. After cranking and starting temperarily many times it finally chugs along and stays running. I choke it until it fires for the first time and then shut the choke off.

I haven't used a carb cleaner, the bike has 8,000 miles on it and is a '98.

By the way, once it warms up, it runs very well.

Any ideas?

When cold, my bike tries to do the same thing, I just give it a touch of throttle for a moment or two until the choke gets it running then let it warm up.

Your slow jets may be lightly clogged. Seafoam or Techron should clear them up.
My jets are clear and it's hard to keep it running the first minute or so without the enricher at 30-40 degrees.

Use the enricher (choke) as you have but leave it on a minute or two while adjusting it to 1500 rpm [some do 2k or close to it].

You'll know to turn off the enricher when the idle begins to stumble. I avoid blipping or running the throttle too high on a cold engine.

You may want to be certain that the choke is fully engaged.  It takes a really stiff push to get mine to the stop.

My Standard will start in that temperature range if it fires on the first try.  Otherwise it requires the choke.  Fully choked it starts fine.

When you have moved the choke lever through the travel, you have just taken the slack out of the cable to the right side and the one that goes from right to left.  Keep pushing the lever, maybe harder than you think you should have.  You are opening 6 enrichner valves, not just a butterfly like some other bikes.

You are absolutely right. I moved the choke as usual and it wasn't doing anything. I over rode the travel and sure enough the slide moved. I had no idea I wasn't really choking it off.

I can't thank you enough. It was embarrassing to crank and crank in front of other bikers in the cold. I look forward to trying it tomorrow morning when it's cold.

I tried it tonight and it worked perfectly. I lubed the slides as much as I could and it works better.

Most people coming to the Valk have the same thing happen.  I did when I first got mine.  Glad it helped.
