Has anyone ever made a homemade solo/cruiser bar instead of paying $90 for the one from Big Bike Things?

If so, how did it turn out and what did you use?

Kinda funny to see this post, juat built a jig to try and bend flat stock to try and make one possibly have it powder coated.  Or if it is not hard to do may buy some stainless flat stock and give that a try. I had a piece of flat stock 1" x 1/4 bent that easier than I thought I could. First try not so good both bends look different from each other. Been down with flu for a week so have not tried it again.

This got me to thinking. I wonder if a guy could take a solo bar into a machine shop and have them replicate several. Sell off the spares and maybe bring the overall cost down? Same with the solo rack. Man, have you seen how much those crazy things go for?

My friend/neighbor made me a solo bar. Then I took it and had it chromed. I think it turned out pretty good.  (The camera flash brings out every finger print and smudge.)

He also made me a hitch rack for my cooler and extra stuff. He does great work.

Frank Smoak made a solo bar out of tube stock. He had to get the curve just
right and flatten out the ends... he said it was hard to do it that way... he was
a pipe fitter at the Navy Yard...

I used to have the rear fender luggage rack and the luggage carried that sticks out in back. In order for me to lay a flat suitcase on that area, I went to Home Depot and got some flat stock and made a cruiser bar myself. I made it at the right height to allow support for whatever I was laying/carrying back there. The hardest part was getting the angle correct so the top would be flat when installed. Cost me $40 to have it chromed, still have it stashed somewhere in the shop, have no idea where.

I don't think chromers will touch anything that has exhaust
soot on it. I wish I could get my triple tips re-chromed, or maybe
find another set for less than a million dollars...

I'm considering using some alumninum flatbar and bending it then polishing it. Stay tuned.

I offered $100 on a set from page three, but they went for a higher
price... I've seen them go for over $300, people want them, so it is
a fair price. I didn't see any others on the classifieds...

I got a new set from HDL years ago, and a year and a half ago,
I got a like-new set for $70...

-Mike "$70/$100 = less than a million"

I made mine a couple years ago out of billet aluminum and then polished it. It fits the bike perfectly, you can see it if you look at my photo bucket. Trouble is, if you want one like it you would have to have a CNC mill  Cheesy.  I think I'm calling it a grab rail
