What does the data say?

I replaced my rear bearings today.  It's like a new bike again.

However, I noticed that on the left (brake) side, the hole in the wheel that the axle passes through was not round.  It is somewhat elongated.  Is this by design so that you can move the inside-the-wheel spacer out of the way somewhat to get a punch on the bearing from the other side, or has the spacer "wallered out" the opening?  It seems to me that either way it shouldn't be a big deal since the bearing holds the axle, not the wheel itself.

I guess you're talking about the wheel core.  I never looked that hard at the wheel but you ought to be able to tell if it is the cast surface which I would think it should be, or an abraded surface which would indicate wear.

You're correct that it's the bearings that are important and the bearing recesses which should be a perfect fit for the bearings.
