I am changing out the thermostat on a 98 Tourer.
I have had 4 different Valks apart and all had the thermostat bypass hole facing the front of the bike from factory installation.
When reading the Honda shop manual, it specifies the bypass hole be placed to the rear direction of the bike..

Which is the correct direction ?

Thxs... Dan

I really cannot see how it would make a difference as long as it is installed right side up, but it does not hurt to follow the manual.

Not a clue? I would follow the manual, could be because of the two sensors screwed into the housing. Might be the bleed hole keeps the warmest water at the sensor during warm up. Just a thought, cause I don't know, I would do as the good book says.

I put the other 3 in with the hole to the rear as the manual suggests...
No issues with them yet ..
Was just a thought on which direction and why ..

Thxs !

When I was just a lad studying the black art of engineering, I asked the same question.

The answer was: If the thermostat is horizontal, it makes no difference, but if the thermostat is vertical the hole must be at the top.
The reason, apparently, is to allow any air that is in the system an escape.
This ensures that the business end of the thermostat is fully immersed in coolant.
I have always used this rule and never had a problem.
Hope this helps
