Hello everyone,

I have decided to replace the main jets and slow jets on my 97 California bike

I remembered reading someplace that when adjusting the mixture on the California bike… It should be started 2 1/4 verse 2 1/2… Which led to my questions

1. Are the jet sizes different for the California edition bikes (35 and 100)?

I'm going to use the method described in shop talk and leave the cables in place and just replace the jets

2. What gaskets or O-rings do you suggest I purchase or have on hand to complete the job?

3. What size screws/hex nut bolts  to replace the float bowl screws

4 would you kindly suggest places where I can make a reasonable purchase of the jets,  gaskets, O-rings etc.

Any other helpful hints or tips will be greatly appreciated

Thanks again,

Whiskey bravo

Get yourself a good Japanese screw driver and stop rounding off  "Phillips" screws. (they aren't Phillips)

why larger jets? did u modify the exhaust and mainly the air box to allow increased airflow into the engine?  u will lose HP going to a larger MJ if stock. any pilot jet can be opened up to 4 turns out. using OEM PJ will provide better mpg and crisper throttle response.
manufacturers factory tune rich on top end to protect the engine and their warranty.

all new phillips screw drivers have been modified to work for SAE and JIS screws.

from one web site.

"the modern Phillips tool bits are either machined or ground and made without the old Phillips "curve" to the sides of the flutes that made the Phillips "cam out" on torque. Most new Phillips bits and screwdriver tips are made with straight flutes, so they work as both standard Phillips and JIS screwdrivers."

A standard phillips screwdriver is a 37 degree working angle. A jis is a 45 degree working angle.
They will sorta work O K. If you do normal maintenance , the jis is worth the investment.  crazy2

I have to correct myself. A JIS is a cross point configuration , while a phillips is made with a radius in the cross area. A jis will work on a phillips , but a phillips will slip out of a jis.

JIS is not 45 degrees.
Reed and Prince, also called Frearson, is another historic cross-head screw configuration. The cross in the screw head is sharper and less rounded than a
Phillips, and the bit has 45° flukes and a sharper, pointed end.

Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) cross-head screwdrivers are still another standard, often inaccurately referred to as Japanese Phillips. Compatible screw heads are usually identifiable by a single depressed dot or an "X" to one side of the cross slot. This is a screw standard throughout the Asia market and Japanese imports. The driver has a 57° point with a flat tip.

Phillips is not 37 degrees
Phillips driver has a 57° point and tapered, unsharp (rounded) flutes.

I have a set of Vessel jis screw drivers, (different handles than above), best screw drivers I have ever used. I use them for all "Phillips" type screws. Top quality, great investment.

Thanks everyone,

I was never aware of the Japanese standard verse American Standard Phillips head driver…

Valkpilot– thanks for taking the time with pages…

Last Question–

Fuel mixture screw: running the screw out  VS running the screw in…

Running screw out: increases fuel to the mixture?

Running screw in: lessens the amount of fuel to the mixture?

Thanks again,
