There's something just not right about driving above the clouds..

The Millau Viaduct is part of the new E11 Expressway connecting Paris and Barcelona and features the highest bridge piers ever constructed.
The tallest is 240 meters (787 feet) High and the overall Height is an impressive  336 meters (1102 feet), making this the highest bridge in the world.
Interestingly, the Millau Viaduct is not straight.
Why???
It's because a straight road could induce a floating sensation as you drive across it. So, a slight curve remedies that feeling. The curve is 20km in range. Moreover, the road has a light incline of 3% to improve the visibility and reassure the driver.  An amazing engineering feat!

The Millau Viaduct I feel is one of the most ingenious architectural and engineering accomplishments in recent years.  Since the bridge is literally "in the clouds" the engineers intentionally curved it to prevent the traveler from getting a sensation as if they were about to "float away".

It is definitely one of the things I most hope to see someday when I ride across Europe.

I'm not a big fan of high ups. So, nope. I'd rather go play on the winding road under it.

I'm waiting for the new Hoover dam bridge to be opened outside of Las Vegas, It will be a fun one too!

Ditto. I have a aversion to bridges in general on a bike. I have to develope tunnlevision and focus strictly on the rear tire(s) of the bike/car infront of me. And I forget to breath sometimes. ???

The twisties below are more my thing.

Per Google map those aren't much of curves. That fisheye picture makes it look like curves. I'd guess the distance between "corners" is half mile at least and there are really only three curves.

Take the bridge since most of us are just dreaming anyway. You have no fear in your dreams, go for it.

Zoom in at Google maps and you can see parts of the bridge and some of the imcomplete pillars.

I would defiantly do both over and under ! Just dont know what order would be the best.  Maybe the bridge first just to say I did it, and it looks like the road underneath would be very hard NOT to ride again on the return path.   coolsmiley

Misfit and Ronnie have it right - ride the bridge and the roads below. Very Cool. I think Jean from France may have posted this before. It is awesome!  cooldude

20k, really? That would also make an interesting run - a 10k times two.  Cheesy

Hi brothers,

I did a ride on Viaduc of Millau in 2005.
Actually on the Viaduc you cannot see around you. Moreover it's forbidden to stop on the Viaduc.
So you cannot imagine how high you are :

Depending on the weather, sometimes you ride over the clouds....

The best is to ride on the roads below the Bridge......almost 300 meters...
