This is the second time since Ive owned the Valkyrie.  I bought her with 5,300 miles on the clock and bought new spark plugs around 50-60K miles.  Now Im at 107K and I have just bought some the second time.  That makes these the third set of plugs since new so far.  I know, it probably was a waste of money, she ran so great going to get the plugs, I had to talk myself into actually buying them.  Now they are all gapped and ready to go in.

Well, they are in.....I bought seven (wanted 9 since they were only 2bucks, but they had only 7) because I index them...only one didnt flop right in and fit nicely on one cylinder or another, so it was perfect.  Ya gotta love this motor......these are plugs that ran over 50K miles on a motor with 107K on the clock when these were removed.  I may put the K&N prefilter on next time, as these are a micro-tad on the lean side, but not too bad, and dry and consistent.....better looking as a set overall than any other engine I have ever had

If you are a tad lean now, improving air flow with a K&N filter will be more lean. Did you mean that you already have a high flow filter and just not the pre-filter?

Yes...it used to run a bit rich, so I went to a K&N....this is how its been ever since but without the pre filter.........do you thing the foam pad thinggy will help it a bit?

No, I believe you are supposed to oil the main filter but the foam thing just lays on top dry......but I guess its good to know since Ive never used it.....maybe someone knows for sure

What do you mean you "index" your plugs? I'm unfamiliar with this.

I mark where the little electrode thing is that is welded to the side of the plug at the business end, then make sure it is positioned at the lower half of the cylinder so the "spray" is pointed directly into the cylinder, not into the cylinder wall at the top........some go as far as making sure the "spray" is right to the intake valve.......you need indexing rings or a whole bucket of plugs to do that.  Im happy if its between the 4 and 8 oclock positon

Some say it makes no difference, I think I noticed a very slight improvement in smooth idle and easy starts, but its not a huge thing......just something I picked up and like to do

Chris when I installed my K&N filter, the instructions said to use the foam prefilter  as the oiled filter might let it run too lean, it needed some resistance.  Mine is in but I don't know if it made any difference.

Hmmmmm I thought I read somewhere that adding the prefilter would cause a lean condition..... or some condition and most were running without the prefilter?

The more you restrict the inlet air, the richer it will run, I run the foam with my K&N and plugs look good on my I/S

Chris, unless you have rejetted carbs, you really should run the prefilter (I do)...its recommended for the application, and while some stock bikes do OK without it, others have leaned out just on the prefilter delete.  It's not like it blocks any significant airflow, and as the oiled K&N dries out between clean/reoiling, it helps keep the air .... cleaner.  You may lose .5mpg, but the bike should run a bit cooler (in theory).
