Turn bike on, in first gear, no light. Leave in first gear and put kickstand up and neutral light dimly illuminates. Shift into neutral and it fully illuminates. Ride it through all gears neutral light stays dimly lit. Any. thoughts.

Neutral switch assembly is in the front of the bike behind transmission cover. Look for the wires and check for splits or breaks.

Looked it up, you should check for continuity at the red connector behind the right steering side cover.
Check the light green/red wire. Continuity when in neutral, non when not.
Page 19-15 in my Honda manual.
If it's not working correctly, sounds like you either get use to it, or replace by pulling trany cover.

Red connector behind the right steering cover if it is an Interstate, Green connector in the headlight bucket if it is a Std/Tourer. You might also check the Neutral Diode in the fuse box.

Is that another way of checking? I have a C/CT manual and a C/CT/CF manual and both show the same procedure for checking the switch, behind the right tank side cover. Without going down to the shop and removing the covers to check, seems I remember the red connector is there on all my bikes. Forgot to mention the diode, but those are usually bulletproof.

Sorry, they both have a red connector behind the right steering cover, the Std/Tourer has an additional green connector in the headlight bucket. My mistake.

DarkSider, did you replace the bulb for the neutral light with a LED? If so, this could just be oily dirt built up on the neutral switch insulator.

Definitely no need to apologize and if that works, it's not a mistake. Getting the cover off is a bear and you probably need to move the tank back. I'd rather take the headlight off.

I forgot to say the bike is a standard. Im on the road at the GOTF's, but will do some testing in the headlight bucket, and side cover.
Thanks guys for the great replies.

I would think there is a short somewhere and the wire is grounding when not in neutral. It could also be the switch. Check/test your wires before pulling the front cover.
