"AN APEX IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE"

Robertsville, MO

« on: April 15, 2017, 03:00:45 PM »

Well I always see people asking the best way to haul a bike this size and where to attach the straps.

I have heard stories of bars giving out when used for strapping so here are the two points I use to strap my bike.

Hope this helps someone. It's always better to have a stop that captures the fron tire as well.

By 2 points , you mean one on each side ?

I'd use 2 on each side , in-case one breaks or comes lose , it has happened to me , besides , I enjoy the security of having  4 tie downs

The trip I took recently to Ventura Ca ,   I had 6  straps

I agree I wouldn't use less than 4 and feel safer with 6 especially after seeing a Harley get literally flung off a similar setup that you have when the guy made a left turn onto the roadway. The bike hold down on one side broke and the bike flew off the trailer the other tie down held for a moment and then the bike whipped off the trailer and flung off the side of the road. Lucky that the damage was not to bad but better to be safe than sorry.

This is how the factory does it because this was my bike in the crate.

I have used more and I have had straps come loose as well. The difference is that I usually stop every 100 or so miles due to a weak bladder I am am always checking tension at stops.

You will also notice that I am NOT using cam buckle straps since they have a tendency to come loose easier.

This is the way the bike is traveling 600 miles over way to the Smokey Mountains next week.

If more straps make you feel secure great. Too each his own I guess.

This bike is not traveling across an ocean or anything

Nice post. When my friend trailers like this we put a short strap on the chock so the front wheel cannot back out. Has worked OK for several trips  800 miles from Hamburg NY to Myrtle Beach SC.

I hear you on the wheel chock but if anyone over saw the effort required to pull this beast out of that stop you would think it was a waste.

The last trip we made I trailered the bike like this and the wife was daydreaming and drifted and then over corrected. Needless to say the trailer turned into a whip.

The bike did not budge and inch other than the back wheel.

And that's why I bought this last week   https://wheeldock.com/collections/wheel-chock-accessories

Works good , pricey  , but there's no bump/hump/stop
I like it

Yep,
I have looked at those before and seem impressed with the way they work. My stop only cost me $80 at the local Cycle Gear. Before that I was using the cheap model from Harbor Frieght but it was developing a stress crack and figured it was time to replace.

What is that rear strap secured to? Did the rear strap have something between the strap and the muffler? In the picture it looks like they might be touching.

The frame under the fender , I am sure it's not touching , Honda would not do that

Lol you all guilted me into adding two more straps to the bike just for security reasons. And I must admit there is always better to have two many than two few Smiley

Same strapping point though since I feel. That is the strongest part on the bike and if for some reason it does rub it is covered up after the side covers are put back in place.

Try putting your second set from the same point on bike but strap to trailer side to side or slightly rearward, that will greatly stabilize side to side motion.

The rear strap in the crate picture is going over the top of the tire. I have done that before. Keeps the rear down.

Glad you decided to play it safe, every time I see that Harley being flung out the side of the trailer in my mind and think its a Valk I have to clear that nightmare from my mind.  Wink I get the shakes.  Shocked

LOL well I am in Robbinsville, NC and made the trip without incident. None of the straps came loose period.

I know I could have gotten away with two for sure if I would have not used the soft ties. In my mind those were the week link so that is why I added the second set of straps.

Obviously the first set were as pictured and the second set were attached at the same point on the bike but directly to the sides as someone else described.

Hell I even did another one of those tail whips at about 50 miles an hour cause I was looking and pointing at a dinner option to the wife and then realized I was about to hit a curb and yanked the wheel.

All I am saying is that if 4 is your number they can all be attached at that point on the bike and it will ride great. The bike still maintains suspension travel and I use a bungee cord between the hooks to keep them from coming unhooked if the bikes suspension should compress to a point that they could come loose.

I think your biggest contribution to stability is the use of the front wheel chock.
