99 I/S, 60k, desmogged. Recently changed the timing belts and his was running rough. Tested compression, pulled heads and machine shop found that two of them were burnt (NOT bent).  Replaced those valves and reconditioned everything else. Installed heads, set timing, gapped rockers, tested compression (all is fine and equal).

Turns over, but won't start.

Tested plugs - Have spark all around.
Full is flowing - (indication on plugs)

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

UPDATE:  It seems to be in the timing belt adjustment.  What's the trick?

Try jumping the battery. Ignition requires more juice than the starter.

Already jumping the battery.

UPDATE:  checked the timing belt tension and made slight adjustment to make sure both are even and at have the 2kg of force.   IT STARTED. However, it's running rough and sounds like there's something going on inside... like a noisy trans.

Also, when I go to turn it over, every so often it'll have a kinda backpressure and stop turning over... then it'll start again turing over a gain.

Did you get the ignition and trigger wheel pickups on correctly positioned/clearances?

Maybe a bad bank angle sensor?

Doesn't sound like good things have happened.   Valve timing may be off.  Hope you're not back to square one

You need to double check your timing again. I'd loosen all the rockers so there's no chance of a valve hitting the piston, then manually turn it over so #1 is TDC. Then check the timing belts pulleys positions relative to the belt pulley timing marks on the case. Sounds to me like timing is waaay off.

Did you have any of the ignition wiring off when pulling the heads?
With "kind of back pressure and stopping" sounds more like the ignition timing is off.
If you have good compression after the rework the valve timing must be fairly good.

It's running now... first time doing the timing belts and didn't realize how sensitive the adjustments are .

UPDATE:  It runs but roughly.  noticed that the right side top coolant pipe is slowly leaking and something slippery was misting out the weep hole of the right exhaust - oil? coolant?  Off that head came and realized the rubber gasket was shot.

I think once that's resolved it should run fine.  The engine was doing well at mid rpms, and can attribute the rough running and rt side backfiring to potentially being a slight coolant leak.  Also, I'm not convinced I applied correct sealant to the cam holder... the manual showed the bottom holes needed it and I may not have done as good a job.

Good news is the left side was actually sounding good.  Overall, I got the impression it was an off balance thing. i.e. right side was off.

Do appreciate the ideas everyone!

UPdate UPDate:

All assembled. Reconditioned Heads, new timing belts.  Running sorta ok.

It's backfiring still and doesn't have the smooth power through the throttle like before... Feels like Timing.

I do notice that the backfiring eases up as I tighten the timing belt tension.  Worried about going too far with that to avoid burning up the tension pulley.

Any advice?

will also go to the other posting on timing belts and see what I can find.
