The nearest dealer is 80 miles away so accessing Honda coolant from there is a last resort.  So, what about Auto Zone or Walmart to find silicate-free coolant?

You can easily find silicate free at advance and auto-zone and places...

50/50 too.

You can look on the label and it will say...

Think about this.  When Honda specified which coolant to use it was twenty years ago.  Through competition and greater needs i.e. engine performance/temps and longevity of newer equipment the quality of the coolants sold today no doubt well exceed what was available in 1997.

Silicate in coolants today is the exception rather than the rule.  Most all are silicate and phosphate free.  But, if it doesn't say so on the label just go to that company's website and more information than you need will be there.

And as has been said about coolant (and oil products) Honda doesn't make them they just charge a whole bunch for their name being on the label.

I wonder what the difference, if any, is between the "high performance" and the "powersports" coolant, besides the name and jug size.

I have used Evans NPG+ (no longer available under that name) since the warranty expired on my Valkyrie.  I installed a coolant temperature gauge at the same time.  I have never had cooling or water pump issues, but because the thermal conductivity of Evans coolant (propylene glycol) is less than water, 0.270 W/m·K vs 0.675 W/m·K @90°C, the bike will run a little hotter than with a 50/50 mix of regular coolant, but with zero risk of boiling over due to the higher boiling temperature, 375°F vs 212°F.

Evans coolant IS propylene glycol.

The Walmart store brand SuperTech does not have silicate on the ingredients list.  I do think silicate free is the norm these days.  I use the Supertech in my old motorhome and just read the label out of curiosity. 

I thought I would need some for the Valk because I kept smelling it and found that it was showing signs of a leak where the hose meets the radiator, for months..  I check the coolant level and I haven't lost enough to measure..  So there..

I have been using Evans coolant in all my liquid cooled engines sense 2002. I think it has saved me both in maintenance and repairs on my diesels and gas engines.

I put Evans in all my bikes soon after I get them.  About to put it in my Kubota diesel.  Soon in the Mazda CX5.  No more cooling system maintenance and goodbye forever to corrosion.

GM says Dex-Cool should be replaced after 5 years, mostly because the protective additives wear out. I assume the same is true of the other brands.

I plan to follow the 5 year schedule; not knowing the history, I changed it when I bought the bike, so I have another 2 to go. Honda says every 2 years, but I think that is wasteful.

I changed mine at 50k to the honda blue just because i was changing all the fluids due to recently purchasing it and no history.  Dont know when I'll do it again. You've owned yours since new,  have you changed your coolant yet? When?

I used to change mine every 2 years, now I have some longer lasting coolant and it recommends every 6 year.... I must enter that is my log book when I did it, I wont remember in six years when I last did it

Just worked on my 99 IS Friday. New hoses, pump and tstat.  Did some research and ended up using Zerex Asian.  Its behind the counter at Orilie's. Meets most of the japan mfg specs and is blue.

agree, that is what I use and will be changing coolant as soon as it warms up some in May, been about 5 years so about time again.  Walmart in yellow jug carries it and if have 2-3 bikes,  get the concentrate full strength is only 3 bucks higher in price than 50/50 mix and get a 1.00 gallon jug of distilled water and mix 50/50 yourself.

My old prestone 50/50 yellow jug states silicate free but the new jugs do not.  I emailed prestone and a prompt reply was sent indicating was silicate free plus hope he takes my suggestion to marketing since I informed him most cycle owners would prefer it said as in years past SILICATE FREE on the jug.  He agreed, will see if the labeling changes next time around??

Jug states good for 5 years/150K miles, but I think 5 years is fine letting it go that long since no one puts on 150K miles on any cycle in 5 years that I know of.

u can strip test and add needed additives. most likely will last past those time frames. this is what is done for diesels.
