The Landmass Between Mobile And New Orleans

« on: October 16, 2009, 12:38:39 AM »

When I change tires the next time, I'm changing the bearings.  I've got an extra set of rims and it's faster to do a R&R rather than the usual way.  As I don't know the condition of the bearings in the spare rims, I'm putting new bearings in before I install them.  My question is which bearing brands are the best and which ones should I stay away from?  I'm going to put 5204s on both sides of the rear wheel so if you recommend a brand that uses a different part number, please let me know it.

TIA,
Marty

Check out the all balls site. They have bearing kits with seals for our bikes. I have read here that they are a better quality. I replaced my rear set with them last winter and will be doing my front set this winter.

I checked their site and couldn't tell which side the rear was for or if it was for both.

The AllBalls rear bearing kit for the Valk contains one 5204 and one 6204 bearing plus a dust seal.  If you use the vehicle lookup application: http://www.goallballs.com/Vehicle_Set.asp and then click on the details link, it will show you what's included.

I've had good luck with these people. I've rebuilt several 4wheeler frontends and rearends and use their bearings in the valk. http://www.vxb.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

Thanks Valkpilot.  That means I can buy 2 rear sets and be able to take of both wheels.  Thanks to you too, Mr. Bubbles.  They've got some really reasonable prices.  a lot better than the 50-60 I've been quoted by the parts houses.

After Diesel checked his All Balls packaging and bearings without finding a country or origin, I called All Balls this morning and talked with Alex.  He told me their wheel and steering head bearing set for our wonderful Valks are made in China.  Then he tried to convince me their bearings are premium ones.  I called Motion Industries and they ordered 2 SKF 5204s and they should be in tomorrow morning.  The salesman told me the SKF bearings are premium and are made in Western Europe.  I'll let you know when I get them tomorrow.  Priced @ $42 per bearing.

If it were up to me, I'd stay with the OEM's.  I changed my frt bearings at 100K "just to be safe", not because of a problem.  Now at 211K and still no problem on the replacement OEM's.  As to the OEM rear bearings:  I've had to have them changed several times (three times- I think).  The original set lasted to about 80K, when I needed to change the u-joint and changed the bearings at the same time again "just to be safe".  The last time was after a tire change by a dealership tire changer who didn't know what the H--- he was doing and left the axel nut too loose, which ground up the bearings, which they replaced.  IMHO

My Valk only has 43K miles on her.  I'm changing the rear tire this week and have a spare wheel.  To make things easier, I'm mounting the new tire on the spare wheel.  As I don't know what condition the spare wheel's bearings are in, I'm replacing them with 5204s on both sides.  I've got a spare axle with spacer coming in.  I'll get the spacer machined down .26" on the small end.  While the Valk is in the air, I'll be conducting final drive and driveline maintenance.
