I went and bought another beautiful 99 std. from Arizona that the owner actually said had been sitting for 2 yrs. because of his health. The bike is nearly flawless with only 13k on it, but the carbs were varnished worse than any thig I have seen before. A couple of the slides /needles were frozen in the varnish. I disassembled the carbs carefully. Removed all rubber parts and soaked each carb body and jets and bowl etc. in lacquer thinner or MEK(not the floats or needle valves of course). After soaking I blew out all passages with carb cleaner and some compressed air.... there is the rub, as I was working on reassembling them ,I got to carb 3 and noticed that the fuel screen in the fuel rail appeared to be shredded. All of the other screens are in fine shape as far as I can see.. this is a long story to get to the question of what to do about that screen. I ended up using a pick to pull what was left of it out of the channel and then cleaned the debris out with more carb cleaner and Compressed air. Can I fly without that screen or should I try to put a screen of some kind back in there? What do you guys think?
On anothr note, has any one ever talked about using another set of fuel T's between carbs ! and 3 and between carbs 2 and 4? so 1 and 3 don't feed through 2 and 4??? you think there would be any advantage to that???

My opinion, if you can replace the screen with OEM, (if there is one) that's what to use. If you just manufacture something and put it in there it may come back to bite you? I have never been in my carbs, no problems there (Now I've done it) but from all the post about what a PIA these things can be seems like doing it right is the ticket, especially in this area.
I'm sure there will be other opinions about the screen from the carb guys.

Screens are not replaceable. If screens are gone replace that carb body. If you don't you will be very sorry. There is a screen filter in each carb and one in the tank. They are very important. Let me which carbs they are and I might have an extra body laying around in my spare parts. Also lacquer thinner will not clean the passage in the carbs look into krudd kutter that will clean everything rubber and all. You want the white bottle that says parts wash

don't know if these 3 sizes fit, however they are sold, but not in Honda parts books. http://rt21trading.com/catalog/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30780

Thanks for the in put you guys. "Attic rat" , I apparently made the wrong judgement today and put the carbs back together ,completely. They are not on the bike yet , but I guess I better tear back into them. It was carb 3 , of course, the one with most parts on it. I have 2 other sets of carbs , both with one bad body each. I can salvage a #3 body but neither is as clean and nice as the one without the screen. Do you suppose that one of the screens that "98valk" found would work in the passage there??, You commented that bad things would happen without that screen in there. I'm curious if I could put a 10 micron fuel filter in the line and circumvent those problems.??

You could try those screens they are made to be inline but the stock ones are cupped or basket shape Just be careful you don't want to restrick the fuel flow You might try to remove a screen from one of your junk carbs and try to install it in the one you are rebuilding
