Hey all!!! I was at Inzane and saw that someone had a GW vent in their windshield. It looks like it was DIY but not 100% for sure. I would love to do this as Nebraska has been hotter than hell. I don't have the money (kids college) to buy a new windshield with this installed. Figured it was easy, just buy the vent, mark the windshield and cut with a dremal. install and there we go. Wondering if anyone else has done this and directions or things to watch out for...

It's very easy
1. Buy the vent 2. Mark the windshield 3. Cut with dremal* 4. Install vent
There you go!
*we used a jig saw with painters tape all around the area so the jigsaw didn't scratch the windshield. You can also draw the cut line on the tape making it easier to see and follow the line.

Try it on a piece of cardboard first, if you screw up you haven't destroyed your shield.

In plastic, it is best to drill all four corners, rather than try to cut to them with your saw, so you don't have stress risers (starting points for cracks). A rotary cutter is essentially the same as drilling, if that's what you have. Just don't try to rush it; let the cutting tool move at its own pace.

Use WD40 as a lubricant while drilling the corners of the hole and also for cutting with a jig saw...especially when cutting an OEM Lexan shield, to stop the material from melting and sticking to the blade...just have someone spray a little at a time as you cut.

I'm not sure the vent will help much with cooling. I have one on my Clearview on Jade. It does help feed air into the vacuum behind the shield to help with buffeting however. You might get better cooling utility from Baker wings if you don't already have them. I Put them on all my bikes except George the blown bobber.

Ditto to what Mark says. I had a vent in my Clearview and could tell no difference between open and closed. When it's hot, you're hot--not much you can do.

In the heat I ride with a mesh jacket and can definitely feel a stream air hitting my chest when the vent is open. Some riders may be expecting A/C with a vent, it is still hot air, but a flow of hot air is better than no air, it will cool your sweat.
+1 on the bakers, they can be used to direct air where/when you need it.

While it does provide some air flow - which will cool a sweaty chest - the reduction is buffeting can be noticeable, especially if your shield is short enough to see over (mine is). Just be sure to close it when you ride into rain.

I was looking for cooling and the buffeting. But since so cheap and easy (hopefully) if just buffeting, I will take that. The baker wings I am looking at but have to decide on gas for riding or that right now. LOL..

This is the very first thread that I've ever read that correctly identifies the low pressure system behind the windshield as the largest culprit of buffeting. Nice call MarkT.
I was thinking of adding a vent strictly to reduce the low pressure behind the windshield and reduce buffeting. I wear a neck chiller in the heat to keep me cooler. I've also wet my helmet liner down and the vent open on the helmet really helps in the heat.

Well I now need something to help with the cooling so good to know. Road in Lake Mead NP last Sunday. 118 on my temp gauge on the windshield. Burn some hair off my legs from the heat of the engine through my touring pants. WOW it was hot.

I just installed a clearview windshield with a vent and moto wings on my interstate prior to going out west. I had the oem wind deflectors under the fairing and on the pods before installing the new ones. Boy what a difference the wings made. I should have installed them years ago. I ride with joe rocket mesh jacket and pants. I were a drymax shirt with a cooling vest under the jacket. All I had to do was re soak the vest when I stopped for fuel.
