When I change the function of my stock radio to cb, I get an Er on the bottom left of my display instead of showing what channel my cb is on.  I can change the cb channel, but when I stop changing the channel, Er comes back on.The rest of the radio functions as it should.  I can listen to am, fm, or aux through speakers or headset.  Volume works, balance works, fader works, can adjust bass, etc.  I just keep getting an error message when I try to change to cb.  I unplugged all 3 connections and plugged them back in to no avail.  All fuses look good, also.  Any ideas?

Silly question:

Is the CB unit actually installed?

I'm wondering if the ER is meant to signify Error

I figured out the problem.  I was sitting in driveway working on helmet headset and to test, I was turning key to acc position.  I turned key to on position later to move and Er went away on display and showed cb channel I was tuned to.  Works fine in on, shows Er in acc.  I think it must be how bike is wired.

er is error on the cb. have found a couple of things that would cause this on my cb. one is the squelch set to low. i always stay around 16 on squelch to keep from getting electronic interferance problems. next is the intercom setting. if the intercom is set to high it would cause the error code at times. dont know why but it did. so i turn the intercom off my wife does not ride any more. never got the error code in the acc position so thats new. some times going down the road i will get the ER code. to fix that i just switch up or down 1 channel then back to my channel and that clears the code..

You have problems in the CB module or connections to the main stereo itself.

Both the Std/Tourer and I/S versions should allow you to set the squelch or intercom volumes all the way to "1" (or to "20") without faulting.

The "Er" code signifies a communications protocol fault. By that: Electronics of the day (late 90's) used various rudimentary protocols ('data languages') to talk with one another, much as today's late-model cars and motorcycles use CAN-Bus.

Clarion used a proprietary protocol known as C-Bus for intra-peripheral communications. Upon power-up, there's a "Who are you?" handshake between all connected devices. When you change the CB channel, adjust the volume and whatnot on a Hondaline CB it's done via a serial data stream - not an analog signal.

Dirty or oxidized connectors and poor grounds are the #1 source of problems in a CAN (Car Area Network), owing to the environment they're operated in. #2 is the switches in those handlebar-mounted control pods.

One thing I have found is the squelch on these have to be set high. Around 18 or get alot of interference. And if go to 20 other bike c.b.s cant hear you. Maybe just mine.

There is an internal (inside the radio unit) adjustment for initial squelch threshold, and another for microphone gain. The old Tech Archives has a thread or two on it.

R102 and R103 are the potentiometers in question.
