Hey guys! Maybe I'm overly cautious, but I've noticed a vibration in my handlebars between 30-40 miles an hour. Doesn't matter the gear, and it happens on acceleration and deceleration. It only happens I. That very narrow range of speeds. Nothing in the feet or the seat. A little about the bike. I've had the bike about a year, so maybe it's been doing it all this time and I never noticed it because I'm blasting through that range 97 Standard, 48,000 miles, double dark side, balanced with dyna beads. Any ideas, guys?

My U joint AND wheel bearings went at about 93 G on the miles. It's NOT an exact science as to WHEN the U joint or wheel bearings crap out UNLESS the failure is catastrophic. THEN it splains itself. And NOT tryin to be a smart azz here. More noticeable on acceleration or deceleration? I noticed my vibrations More on decal. Which I found out after tear down was in FACT wheel bearings and U-joint! Kinda 2 fer as it were. RIDE SAFE.

No difference between accel or decel. Just in that narrow band of 30-40 mph.

That is a very difficult thing to inspect from the chair. It could be you're being overly paranoid, or it could be your u-joint is failing. I'd get a u-joint for backup and ride her. If it's the u-joint, you'll know soon enough. Or, you could tear her down and inspect it.

Sounds like a Shinko front tire I had. It's not a bad idea to have a u-joint on had though. Just having one on the ready is good peace of mind.

I have not had a U-joint go out but what you describe sounds like a front wheel out of balance like I've had a couple of times when it was due for a change. How's your front tire as far as wear? And the guys on this forum describe a U joint going out as your worst nightmare and usually felt down in the foot pegs?

Ive been in the ops position. Replacing g the ujoint is relatively easy Install a new one and check the old one over carefully. If it checks out you've got a spare. Mine was seized tight. So a good inspection should tell the tale

Recently had to replace a bad U-joint. Didn't feel anything via the handlebars. More in the seat and pegs. Think Meathead has the front runner idea that being the tires. With that is the possibility of the beginning of bearings failing. This would be the first direction I would go.
From reading these boards for some time, your bike being a 97 there is an outside chance of a clutch issue but the symptoms don't quite match only happening between 30 - 40 mph regardless of gear. I would expect a broader range of symptoms.
I should mention I am not a mechanic and have only stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once.
I'd start with inspecting the tires and if due to be replaced soon, replace now.

When I had the issue with the Shinko, I couldn't see anything wrong. Did all kinds of stuff trying to cure it, including new u-joint. It wasn't until I tried a different tire that I cured the problem. Couldn't see anything amiss inside the tire either. I'm sure all brands have some lemons, but I'll never go with a Shinko again.

You might also want to check the pinion gear and cup at the other end of the drive shaft. Since the vibration occurs at 30-40 during accel and decel regardless of what gear the symptoms follow the drive system or as mention also the tires. It could be a buggered up gear and cup. I just changed mine at 115K. Thought my U joint was bad but it was very much OK but the gear teeth and the teeth on the inside of the cup were just about gone and I was getting slippage during acceleration. Changed out those components and it's back to smooth operation. My 2 cents worth.
