I replaced the front bearings on mine a few months ago around 60k miles. Also rf bearing that went out. I used all balls kit with bearings and seals because it was in stock at local honda dealer. I have used their wheel bearings and fork seals in the past on other bikes with 0 issues. I just chalked it up to 97 having smaller front bearings than other years.

Sometimes the spacer inside the wheel interferes with checking the bearing. I'd double check it is rough turning and not because of the spacer.

yep did that. its the bearing. installed the axle, through the forks, slides right in, doesn't seem to be misaligned. Left side bearing is nice and smooth.
found these SKF bearings. H indicates Viton seal.
