Dag's Norway page says 2001? I thought it might have been earlier than that?

Just checking before I use aluminum polish on my wheels.

2001 is the first year that "GL1500CD" shows up in the fiche.

D stands for "deluxe" I think, and I think those are the ones
that were clear-coated...

-Mike "the only ones?"

I had a 2001 Interstate for a few years (2007-2008) and they were not clearcoated.  I've had my 2003 Standard (GL1500CD) since new so I had both at the same time and it always bugged me how much worse the Interstate's wheels looked.

So I guess I don't have to worry about damaging the clear coat on my 2000. Smiley

My 2000 indeed had a clear coat on the front wheel, so advise doing a test area. It may have been due to a partial demarcation year where some wheels had & some wheels didn't. For example, they ran outta non-coated wheels and had to requisition their coated stock. Whatever the reasons, you get a stupid feeling when you realize you're removing a clear coat, encapsulated, the internet makes you stupid, strikes again. If anybody has both types, perhaps they can compare them side-by-side, or remove half the coating on an unusable clear coated wheel.

The factory clear coated wheels outside surfaces are not machined completely. The inner part behind the front rotors is left rough and not polished however they are clear coated. The non clear coated wheels are machined all the way back to the bearings.

It's possible someone has polished the wheel. In that case it will be polished all the way back to the bearing. cooldude
