Anybody had one break? Saw a post on here that OE is not even a grade 8 so I'm thinking about changing mine before it breaks.  Maybe I'm just paranoid but it's a lot of weight on that thing

I've heard of the side stand SPRING bolt getting snapped off, I've done it twice.

Never heard of the side stand bolt breaking.

I have a spare spring and bolt just in case.  Not very expensive and easy to carry in saddlebag.

grade 8 is not a metric grade, besides that, grade 8 is not always the way to go. grade 5 is better for constant flexing.  use oem part here.

Beg to differ, grade 8 is heat-treated 4140 you can't beat that for this application

so are you putting over 116030psi pressure (grade 8.8 oem) min tensile strength on it, to cause it to fail?
I haven't heard of a large failure rate on this part except from riders who hit a curb or steep driveway.

will grade 8 at over 150000psi min tensile cause the support structure to fail before the bolt does? easier to deal with a broken bolt on the road than the support structure. sometimes certain parts are designed to fail before offers, for easier repair and/or replacement. this is a good engineering practice. something to think about.  Smiley

I think you guys are talking about different things.  The thing that breaks is the spring hook, 50536-MZ0-010, which is not a standard bolt, but an application-specific part.  I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a strength grade like a standard bolt.  I've broken it once, and carry that part and a spring in my trip toolkit as spares.

Hook, I just posted that I sheared off my bolt for the spring, not to the kickstand. What part did you order? I can't find it on the microfic

I don't know how much sheer pressure is on that pivot Bolt but I'm sure it's in the thousands psi focused on that little point. I'm not doing anything weird with my bike that would cause a failure like that in fact I baby that kickstand. frankly I'm more worried about the sidestand itself which is a forging snapping than I am either the pivot Bolt or the mounting bracket.

Metric grade 8.8 is the same as SAE grade 5.

I think if you drag that bolt going over a speed hump (or something), it's going to break regardless of the bolt quality.

You think any strength bolt is going to jack the (850lb) bike up onto a hop?  Or drag a groove through the blacktop?

I think having spare spring and special bolt on board is a good idea, and a zip tie (or short bungee) to hold the side stand up if you just want to get home and fix it there.
