Hey all: Have searched the forum and Utube for a step by step repair when repairing the idler gear on a 1997 Valk. I haven't been able to locate a video or instructions on how do the job. Engine is out and stripped down, starter out and trying to find the best way to remove the broken gear. HELP is desperately needed. Thanks to any and all suggestions .
Ken, ONt, Canada.

The Honda shop manual should tell you everything you need to know.

Hi Muscrat, I'm just about to replace the starter gear on my Valk after a hydrolock. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated. If you do find any tutorials please add the links on here. Chris.

First of all I found all of the info on this tread were very helpful. I would not suggest trying without pulling the motor and definitely get your hands on the 2 sockets listed (46 mill, 12 point, and deep I believe the other was 39 mill) they're listed on this thread then make sure to do your carbs.
I'm only half way through (my mechanic I mean) good so far. I had to buy the smaller socket, couldn't buy the 46 mill, got lucky a Honda mechanic friend had a new never used one that he lent me. That calls for a case of beer.
Anyway follow the tweets on here. also the manual gives you a complete brake down. Also a great time to do the DE-SMOG if that's in your plans.
Best of luck !

It would be nice if you could document the process (with photos) and later post it here.
This is how we improve the body of knowledge in this amazing forum. :-)

Thanks for the comments guys, I intend to remove the motor during the UK winter so I'll take some pics to show the process. If anyone does know of a step by step guide please to add a link. I've not had the bike long and the petcock failed as the bike has not bee used for some time. Unfortunately it hydroloced the day after I rode it 80 miles home after purchase so I never got the chance to check it over. Never mind I guess this is what can happen when you buy a 1998 model in mint condition with 9k on it. It's still usable and my wife and I have had great rides out this summer and it will be sorted by spring next year. Chris.

Give it a good hard inspection. The shaft on which the idler gear rotates, will many times break the boss in the motor cover, the boss in which the shaft resides.

Re posting photo's: Unfortunately the mechanic that is doing the job lives about an hour from me but will see if he will take some. Great wrencher but not much into photography, lol.
Will get as many as I can.
