Been monitoring the CT vs MT debate for quite some time - for a couple of different bikes.  But, the thread going on right now about the F6B going down in Oklahoma due to blowout really has my attention.

My problem is that I have already installed shorter shocks  and really don't want to lose additional ride height by adding a car tire.   I am assuming they're pretty much all lower profile.  Is that correct?  I'm currently running Avon Cobras.

No, not correct.

A 60 series car tire is very close to rear OE bike tire height.

A 55 series car tire is some 1/4-1/3"* shorter than OE tire height.

A 65 series car tire is about that much* taller than OE tires (and the Austone Taxitire 175 is about the same height as a 65)

Just how short are your shocks (and how old)?  And are they rebound adjustable? (if so, they might need cranked a bit tighter to avoid a tire rub; a harder ride is preferable to a chronic rub)

12.5" shocks should not make any difference.  Lower than that, I dunno.  The nut cage mod will be necessary, except maybe not for the Taxitire (dunno).

Usual rubbing is around the outer edge corner on the sidewall, not the tire center.  Shorter shocks that are newer and tightly sprung may not center rub (unless you add a bunch of weight on the back).  Shorter shocks will have less travel and are more tightly sprung than OE 13" shocks (at least when new/er).

If you lose your tail lights, it's a good indicator that the tire rubbed the wiring in the center of the rear fender.  My wiring was rubbed (but never lost lights), but probably before I bought the bike. I fixed, shrink wrapped, and stuck the wiring up tight as possible, at the same time I put my first CT on the back of that bike, and have never rubbed since.  I run 60 series CTs and 13 & 12.5" shocks.

Thanks Jess.  Really good synopsis.

I am running 11.5" Progressives with some pretty good miles on them.  It sits pretty low - almost too low.  I don't have a problem with the "nut mod" or securing the wiring bundle.  Sounds like good insurance.

I will likely go for the Austone, but its size description didn't include the aspect ratio.  That's mostly why I posed the question.

Thanks again for a nicely detailed overview.

I don't think you'll be able to use the Austone with those 11.5 shocks. The Austone is 1.1" taller than a stock tire. A lot of guys have rubbed even with stock height shocks. The 205/60 is pretty close to stock height, maybe a 1/4" shorter. I've run 205/60's, 205/65's, and 195/60. I like the 195 best. It is about a 1/3 of a inch shorter than stock though. If you are going to Prescott again this year, you are more than welcome to check it out.

I have no experience with the Taxitire, only what I've read.

I've read it is akin to a 65; I've never read it's 1"+ over OE height.

Sorry if got it wrong.

To me, 11.5" shocks are trouble.

I'd go back to 12.5" shocks, and then run a tad shorter 205/55 CT..... or the taxitire if that is what you want.

I'd never run shorter than 12.5" shocks.  I drag boards with 13s and 12.5s, almost every ride.

do a tech board search many posts including mine with different tire heights. Austone is tallest, next is 205/65 which I run.  best thing to allow better reach to ground is to narrow your seat, to bring legs straighter to ground. lowering back of bike increases trail thereby changing the handling.

You put a CT on the Valk and it's no more breakfasts at the Bisbee Breakfast Club. I'll disavow your friendship down at D&D Discount MC shop. May locusts plague your home for 99 years.

Ha!  I figured I catch that from you, Sandy.  But, this is between me and the missus...

Sandy rode with me and my car tire to the BBQ last year...well he was way behind me  Grin but then again he has not ridden with me since...could it be because of the car tire?
No matter I will be riding the Super Duke this year

Been running the Austone for most of Jade's miles.  I understood it was about 75 profile, read that somewhere.  I could measure it but not sure where to measure the height for a definitive calculation. It's definitely taller than all the other tires I've run.  3500rpm gives 85mph indicated (80 actual).

A car tire is engineered to carry 4x the weight of a motorcycle.Millions are spent designing and testing car tires.Ive been running the dark side for 15 years, and feel safer with the fat rear tire.I had a front tire puncture coming off the highway ...15 seconds earlier at highway speeds,I would have wrecked my Valk. When your numbers up..not much your going to do,to change it.
