Noticed the steering stem nut is loose after frt. tire went flat. WOW. Should be ok to just tighten? torque to 10Lb. Correct?

How long have you owned the bike?Usually when reinstalling a bearing assembly, you would over torque the bearing to seat it properly, then retorque.

Just bought it. have had a few. This is 2 presently. He said had progressives put in. But not sure why the nut would be loose. Maybe I need to run it down then back to 10. Or just put it at 10?

As long as you're triple tree moves easily w/o binding or up and down movement, you should be able to retorque the stem nut.  Manual calls for 74 f/lbs for a I/S and 76 for the C & CT.

There are three nuts on the 3 tree system stem.  You're asking about the top chrome one?

If it's loose, I believe you'll need to loosen the top pinch bolts on the forks, torque the "Stem" nut then re torque the pinch bolts.

I just rechecked the procedure in the manual and it appears loosening the top pinch bolts is not necessary.

I think he may be talking about the lock nut located just under the top tree.  I have seen that nut loose as when it is installed and brought up against the actual bearing retainer nut it doesn't usually line up with the keeper tab.  So it is turned back just enough to run the tab in.

Yeah, but he did state "Stem" nut, so we'll see, maybe. Smiley
