when I pull on it, I get a "chatter" feel, like the rubber plunger is sticky.  seems like I have to pull it hard to activate the brakes.  I rebuilt the fronts 2 years ago so I don't think its a caliper thing.  but hey lot of wisdom here why not get feedback.

anyone?

Sounds like the master cylinder. I would attach a hose to one of the caliper bleeder valves, open it up slightly just like you are bleeding the brakes and then see if you can pull the lever. If you can pull the lever with the bleeder open, its probably the calipers, if you can't pull the lever in with the bleeder open, its probably the master.
Good luck.

Mine did that chatter. I removed the lever and noticed that the curved foot that actuates the M/C wasn't smooth.  A little Emory cloth and all wrs greatly improved

What Chris said happened to me. Might just bleed them any way see if it helps. Start simple.

just gotta say thanks to all who replied.  whatever may have been creating the chatter in the lever, it was fixed via cleaning the plunger / lever contact point. whew, simple fix
