Traveling home today on the toll way and I noticed my bike vibrating and imediately pulled over to the side of the road.  Everything looked fine and got back on the toll way.  Bike started to make a "self destructing " sound and I pulled over again.  Pulling the clutch in did seem to make the sound go away.  Once on the shoulder, I tried to proceede very slowly, as I was about 2 miles from the house.  The bike made some more sounds like I had never heard before and eventually locked the rear wheel.  Got home with road side assistance through my insurance company.
Does this sound like the final drive unit is completely trashed?  Welcome any input.  I realize my description is not scientific so will answer any questions to help diagnose the problem.

Thanks in advance

Since it went away with the clutch pulled in, and eventually locked the wheel, I'm going to guess the U-joint in the final drive grenaded. If it was bearings (or brakes), pulling the clutch in would not have made a difference. This should be pretty easy to figure out once you get the rear wheel in the air.

The yolk ( u-joint ) is not in the final drive it is at the output shaft of the motor.  Still must pull the whole drive train to see.  I think it's either u-joint or pinion cup.

I agree with you Chris, it's something in that area.

I've had this problem also. One of the U-Joint bearing cups locked up. I replace the U-Joint without removing the drive line.. Later on the down the road the pinon cup came loose and had the same vibration as a the U-Joint did when it went out.. I didn't know I was supposed to grease the drive shaft splines inside the pinion cup.. I replaced both the drive shaft and pinion cup.. I haven't anymore problems.

Maybe I don't know what you mean by drive line, but you cannot remove the u-joint without first removing the wheel, final drive and drive shaft.

I think he meant he didn't remove the shaft from the pinion cup and grease it.

I replaced my entire final drive on my 97 after noticing a little play (didn't feel right). Cost $1,500, but runs like a champ.  Just turned 100,000 miles on Monday.
