Author Topic: Newbie questions about Desmoging/Vacuum leaks ....  (Read 2508 times)

I bought a Valkyrie because I kept reading about how reliable and dependable they are.  Then I come here and read all the hoopla about "Desmoging" the engine and Vacuum leaks.  What's that all about ??  I found after I bought the bike the hoses to carbs 3 & 4 had holes in them and the one to the petcock was cracked. Those I replaced. Are there other sources for "vacuum leaks" ??.  Is there a way to check for vacuum leaks ??

That's the problem.  The vacuum lines develop leaks that affect the engine's performance.  In addition, the reed valves develop leaks or stick with the same result.  As neither is really needed, just remove them.  The hardest part is replacing and reinstalling the airbox and fuel tank.  Being the cheap bastage that you are, you can run down the parts, do it yourself and learn about your bike.  The hardest part for me to find was freeze plugs.  I eventually ended up at a machine shop as the part stores in my area didn't have any.  Just look in shop talk, you'll find the instructions.  If you want them with big pictures so you can print it out, just let me know and I'll shoot them to you.

You found the most common sources for the leaks.. Any vacuum line can be a problem if they are used long enough.. The vacuum caps [on the remaining intakes] can also be a source for leakage.. These bikes are quite bullet-proof, but, as in anything,, some maintenance is required..

I appreciate the feed-back on this .... I forgot to mention I also replaced the vacuum caps as well.  It does run pretty dang good now the way it is so I am just going to leave well enough alone but keep the desmog in mind if things start to go awry.  It sounds then that most people are removing the "smog" components to prevent any potential vacuum problems.

Well, it gets rid of a lot of extraneous crap that sits on the top of the motor and gives it a little cleaner look.

I took Normand's article and just put large pictures to each step.  It's basically one step per page.  Works well if you print it out for step by step instructions with easy to see illustrations.

Marty sent me his instructions with the photos. I have already printed it out and order the vacuum caps from Red Eye. Now I have seen it with pictures it makes far more sense. A big thanks from me to the original author and to Marty for adding the photos.  cooldude cooldude

Is there a way to check for vacuum leaks ??

Get a can of starter fluid and spray a little bit around the vacuum lines under the air box.  Any variation in the RPM while doing this is a red flag.  Fir instance, if the RPM climbs slightly when spraying around a certain intake runner, that O-Ring is probably dry.

Of course, avoid getting any around the air box intake... it will DEFINITELY cause an RPM change there!!

The credit is all Normand's.  When I copied the instructions to my hard drive, I turned it into a MS Word document and copied the large versions of Normand's pics to each step of the instructions.  It made the desmog a lot less scary to me and gave me easy to use step by step instructions with large easy to see pics.

Does anyone have one of those chrome metal tubes laying around that they would want to part with ???
I'll use that to make up some fabricated plugs/covers at the shop before I disassemble ....

I got some aluminum cut it down, trimmed it to fit, drilled holes, used hi temp silicone around the edges, and put it under the fitting after I cut the chrome tubing from it.

SODBUSTER,

There is a kit on the market already by Darryl of  xf6-custom

http://www.xf6-custom.com/partpages/desmog.html

All the machining is already done, it is plug and play so to speak!

Great guy to deal with, and a Valkyrie owner to boot.

X Ring... Would it be asking too much for you to send me a copy of your instructions, as well.  I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks... Donald

$65  Shocked  I didn't have more that $10-15 invested in parts for mine.  Four freeze plugs, a pack of vacuum plugs, some scrap aluminum to make the two block off plates and hi temp silicone to make the gasket for the block off plate.  I used the fittings under the engine to hold the block off plates in place.  I just cut the chrome tubing off the fittings.

To help X Ring out I have added the instructions as a download link on the VRCC Espana website here on the links at the rhs of the main page.

Happy to remove the link if it offends anyone.

Colin, I just the link to VRCC Spain to a Spaniard on MCDarksiders who is having a problem with a throttle position sensor.  As US Valks don't have that, I figure the VRCC Europe members are better equiped to help him.

Hey Jim -
Thanks for the "heads-up" on the kit .... I do like that option over the frost plugs. The frost plugs seem like a place to catch water and rust.
