So I'm in the market for a new bike and I'm seriously considering the GL!1500CF. Before I commit further, how easy is it to modify these fairings for 21st century technology. Specifically, how difficult is it to upgrade the audio with an aftermarket set-up (bluetooth stereo, marine speakers, etc.)? Or would it just be easier to get a Tourer and put a Woody's fairing on it?
Hope everyone's riding season is going well.

Speakers would not be a big deal.
As for the technology upgrade that will present some challenges but could be done.
The existing unit works ok(not great) but it is 1999 technology or earlier.
Controls on the handlebar, electronics under the seat and head in the dash, hummmmm complication!

Can't go wrong with a Woodys. And Glen makes me one at a time with hand laid fiberglass. A+++ on quality.

If you do a search you should find a number of threads on adding an amp inside the faring and of course the speaker upgrade.

I upgraded the speakers in my 99 IS fairing and added a CLarion Amp (same company that makes the stereo). Much improved sound but lacks bass response. I will be upgrading the trunk speakers over the winter. Modifications of the stock fairing to accommodate a modern system would be difficult at best due to the design

So I have another question along the lines of the first post in this thread...
Has anyone ever REPLACED an Interstate fairing with an aftermarket one? Would allow you to run your own head unit, custom gages, etc.
I was inspired by pictures of kahnma's custom Valk. It looks like he put an I/S tank on a standard/tourer bike. This allows him to have a fuel gage on his Woody's fairing. Rather than going through the hassle of trying to procure an I/S tank AND a custom fairing, I was thinking it may be easier to just equip an I/S with a new fairing.
Thoughts?

The I/S fairing has quite a bit of space underneath. I've added both my electronic cruise control and a 1600wt amplifier. (Class B so it is on the smaller side). Added XM Radio and marine speakers all around and sounds very nice. (Wife keeps telling me to turn it down ) Adding bluetooth is very easy to add through the Intercom plugs... if you want to feed into a headset. For the wiring, I just created a single bundle and ran it through along the OEM bundle. It included slightly heavier speaker wires for the added watts, stereo plug to the OEM Radio output, Power, Ground (to battery), etc. Went it rather smoothly in one weekend. Hope that helps! Jersey

Jersey Agreed, lots more component room in the IS fairing, and unless you REALLY want the batwing style of the aftermarket, you may find it more economical to get the IS right from the start. The aftermarket fairings usually make a lot more sense when you already own a Std. or Tourer, model and want the hand protection & tunes of a fairing bike without giving up your current ride.

The main problem with trying to upgrade the radio with a different head unit is the integration with the existing controls... pretty much impossible... so it would make sense to start with a Tourer if you wanted to have a very modern all new tech setup.... you can always add the I/S trunk or as some people have done a Harley tour trunk...... And adding a I/S tank is almost plug n play.. If you start with a Black Touer all you have to do is find a Black Tank and trunk.. no painting! If you get the Interstate you will have to have a compromise system and deal with the 90's tech which is doable..... Personally I like the look of the I/S fairing and have basically just upgraded the speakers to Polks- 401's? I think.. and using my iPhone for music and other things, I find that using the iPhone for music get more volume than the radio..... I will be upgrading the CB helmet set up to blue tooth this year as the cord is a pain.... But I like the music of the flat 6 and the wind more often than not..... , so I tend to have the radio off most of the time unless its highway or city traffic... which I try to avoid any way I can. Overall.. Its a 20 yr old bike with 20 yr old tech...... part of the charm B
