I have a 98 Std with 12,500 miles on her. Did the carbs when purchased. I/S diaphram springs are installed. Jets, pipes and air box are stock. What is the best way to improve preformance without going crazy. No super charger or turbo. What are the options and pros and cons of each. Thanks All.

I also have 98 standard and have added this to it. Air lake 6 degree trigger wheel, K&N air filter, two brother 2-1 exhaust, interstate springs and polished intake runners. I have had it like this for 8 years, runs like a scalded rabbit. Top end is 115 (gps) get to 3 digits extremely quick mileage is 32 -42 your choice, Good year triple thread on rear 205/65-16 you need it for the added low end. I have yet to work on my carburetors bone stock just did a de-smong 3 years ago. You have to run premium fuel but is worth it. I really see no need for more, I might be getting old. If you are interested I have a extra 2 brother exhaust and will throw in a 6 degree air lake trigger wheel. Good luck on your added HP

I'd love to send both of mine to Bob to work over, but (there's always a comma but) I'm either going to get laid off or retire soon so I'm trying to save what $$ I have so that the lack of $$ doesn't hinder my retirement rides

You know if your Valkyrie is running good the way it should isn't there enough power for you? It's a muscle bike right off the factory line. My answer about should you soup it up is not really cuz it's already way powerful. Just my 1.5 cents

Fatten the lower end up by going to #38 pilots. Adjustable jet needles; set clips in grooves per your installed exhaust system (ditto idle air screws).
Aftermarket "performance" exhaust. Hint: Cobra 6x6 ain't it.
I/S ICM on Standard or Tourer. I/S carb springs in Standard or Tourer carbs.
Freer-flowing air filter, though the stock unit seems to work fine for me. I have both K&N (w/ pre-filter) and Uni foam filters in their packages. Maybe I'll install them some day.
Polish the intake runners.
If a CA-model bike, swap the cams for their 49-state equivalent. Two Brothers and at least one other outfit offered cams for these bikes once upon a time, IIRC.
Send the bike to Attic Rat for additional invasive work.
I'd forego the Trigger Wheel and go with the ICM change instead, retaining the ability to run 87 octane gasoline. The T-W premise was increased fuel mileage, not necessarily added horsepower.

+1 on polishing the intake runners, flexible ¼" drive and some flapper sandpaper wheels after an #80 grit 3/4" dia x 1" sanding drum works great. They don't have to be polished like a mirror, just get rid of any casting lines and smooth the surfaces for a nice flow. I like my home made 6° TW, but that's all that was available when the bike first came out. If you do a lot of miles, the cost of premium gas may make the 6° less than desireable, but that's between you and your wallet. If you seldom ride two up, a lot of folks swear by a 4° TW and regular to midrange gas, haven't tried that myself. I personally wouldn't touch the airbox on a dare as far as the stock openings and/or baffles, put in a K&N and that's it. YMMV

I did all that Gary 2r's did at 60k miles except darkside. I have 160k miles now and still pulls my arms when I twist the gas. Its all bolt on parts and easy to do yourself. Bike dynoed at 114 hp. It dynoed 96 hp stock. The Two Brothers carbon fiber exhaust dropped 25 pounds and make it sound like it goes. Less weight, more power.

Well, I just picked up a 1999 I/S ICM on Ebay for 59+ ship. What differences are there between the Std ICM and the I/S item? How are the MAp's different? Thanks for the help.

It gives something like a 2 deg. advance from around high idle to somewhere north of 4k rpm. Going by memory on the effective range but the 2 deg. is correct. I have the I/S ICM and a 4 deg. TW, can still run regular gas. I have stock main jets but #38 low speeds, never affected my mileage with them. Also have I/S carb springs, K&N minus the prefilter, aftermarket exhaust. Mine is a '98 Tourer which has rec'd. a few changes over the years, including a centerstand, I/S tank with fuel gauge, temp, and oil pressure gauges added. At speed, I'll get mileage in the upper 30's, hardly ever see anything below 35. If I stay off the interstate and use the country backroads, the mileage with jump to 39+ mpg. Currently and for the last 10 yrs. or so, I've had a manual Pingle petcock installed with an inline filter and DanMarc elec. cutoff. Reason for the inline filter....I extended the pickup tube on the Pingle so I'd have the same reserve available as with the stock petcock. The tube I soldered onto the Pingle is too large for the Pingle screen so it can't be used. I've not had the first minute of trouble with my setup. Your results may differ....and probably will.

Darksider Josh I always admired your Pearl Blue and Pearl White Valkyrie so I found one last year with only 6k miles on it and added it to my collection. For what it is worth I have a bike in storage from Colorado Springs that is on my list to do the performance work on in March.

Only thing I have done to mine so far is the ECT mod, my mileage around town went up with it, and it seems to have a little more grunt when Im riding a gear high. The bike has a lot of power as it is, I have had it at a GPS 121, the bike still had more but that was enough for me.
I thought mine was down on power when I got it, found that the airbox boots werent seated all the way on the carbs, fixed that and she came alive.
Ill be doing a glasspack exhaust and a K&N along with needles and IS springs this winter. If your bike is running well it should have "enough" power but Im mainly doing it for the sound, if I pick up a couple ponies I wont complain.

https://youtu.be/yJh6dxMTR_gAttic Rat prepped bike + Viking exhaust and dynatek ignition. My best 1/8 time this night was 7.62 @ 90.2 mph. I need to work on my launch technique and I'm sure 7.5's are possible. These times are right in line with a stock vrod. Unfortunately, there was a heavily modded vrod there that I wanted a piece of.....He ripped a 7.1 @ 97 on me. ouchie. Fun stuff though.
