Cannot open the microphone on intercom.
What am I doing wrong?

Have you checked the volume setting for the intercom?  Hit the (mental block on name) second top button from the right or the control unit once (if CB is not on or twice if it is), and set the volume level to about 14-15.  Test the mic then. 

The intercom is a open mic setup.  You don't have to hit anything to hear what is said.

The controller also has to be "on". In other words, in AUX, raido or CB. If off no audio works. Off is when you hold the button in for about two seconds.
