Does anyone here know how the following purchase scenario works?

I've talked to my local auto license facility as well as AAA, and neither gives me any confidence that they actually "know" how the process will work.

I'm in PA. I'm buying a Trike in CA.
I am going to fly to CA, pick it up, and ride it home.

In PA, when someone is transferring a vehicle that they have just purchased, out of the state, they are issued a Temporary Tag. It's good for 10 or 14 days and they have to get it out of the state within that amount of time.

I can't seem to find out if CA has a similar capability.

My local licensing facility said that CA does offer a temporary.
AAA said that I would have to get a "real" CA License Plate.

Thoughts?

Thanks, Allan

I believe when you buy a bike or car in California you have 10 days to get it transferred in your name. If your taking it out of state within that time I wouldn't worry about it. Just get the title transferred when you get it home. You will have to pay California taxes if you do register it here.

Here is the DMV web link. If the bike is registered and current in California make sure you get a "Bill of Sale" and you should be good. If it is expired or unregistered you may be able to get a temporary move permit. Check out the DMV site or call their 800 number. Good luck. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/

Yep, still here. Haven't been riding but I still check the board every now and then. At some point I need to resurrect the bike she's just been setting for a long time. Need to get a new battery, go through the carbs flush the fuel system and new tires. I feel like Pa Kettle, "One of these days I got to fix that."

They are correct.  Get a proper Bill of Sale and release of liability on the title.  Drive East and reregister in your home state.  BTW, what part of California are you picking up the bike?

Cheers

Picking up in Sacramento.
Seller has confirmed that I will keep the existing License Plate, which is what I was concerned about.
I think it will work out fine, but I might just take an old PA License Plate with me, just in case....
I don't expect to get pulled over, but having "something" on the back will help ensure it.

I wouldn't put the old PA plate on. Leave the CA plate on. Have the signed title with you. Have a good trip.  cooldude
