da prez Yes, but it's tricky getting into a position to hold a cup while the coyote is pissing. Wasn't sure who would post that but, I knew it was coming.... The task of slipping up on the coyotes while they are doing the deed is simple, the trick is not spilling the contents of the cup while you run for your life screaming at the top of your lungs.... An old sailor told me ya gotta be fast..... His wife indicated he was that. Although, I'm not sure how she meant that........ Rams

Peanut butter in a Hav-a-Heart trap works great.
Warning, it tends to piss the Raccoon off and they try to wreck the trap and crap on everything.

I've got one of those big ass live traps if you want to borrow it. It has caught about 18 raccoons, a possum and 3 cats over the years.
Pete is right about them getting pissed off. They crap like there is no tomorrow and will shred anything that they can reach through the bars of the cage. Letting them out is pretty easy, though. They just seem to worry more about freedom than revenge at that point. I took everything caught (except the cats) to River Legacy Park and released them there. The cats, I just let 'em out and unsurprisingly, they never returned.

Over the years, I relocated 10 or so raccoons from a big live trap. Ditto, the poor fellows rip up everything they can reach (and pulled out a number of their own claws/fingernails in the process) and crapped all over the place. Squirrels, birds and cats just sit there, raccoons never stop fighting. With other animals, I would cover the trap with a towel during transport (to keep them calm), with raccoons, there won't be a towel left when you arrive at the release location. All but one just ran off into the woods when released. One, ran about 20 feet then turned aorund and stood on his hind legs and growled and screeched at me. I don't speak racoon, but I'm pretty sure he was questioning my ancestry, and cussing me a blue streak. @#$#^%&* !!! We get reports of rabid raccoons, close by my house, every year. So I am always extra careful. It's always best to find and repair their entry point(s), before you start trapping them out. If there's a family of them (usually is), you can go to work trapping them outside the building right away. This would be disturbing. We heard you had peanut butter. Give it up, and there won't be any trouble.

The coyote is the only natural predator of the racoon ( according to what I have read). Gander Mountain used to carry urine . A good alternative is non-sudsing ammonia. Spray it around the entry areas to warn the masked bandits. I had racoons in the trusses of my old house. I went up to the opposite end of where they were coming in and started spraying. drove them all out. Nailed sheet metal over the opening. Did a proper repair when they realized they were no longer wanted.

I had been told by a rider who trapped them in his yard (along with the odd cat and skunk), and would relocate them to another area.
He mentioned that most likely they would be dead soon, as raccoons are territorial, and would fight to the death to defend their territory. The area he dropped them off at, was small, on an island.

If they are really territorial, how did I manage to catch 18 of them in one location?

If they are really territorial, how did I manage to catch 18 of them in one location? I did a quick search, found this. Raccoons are not territorial. Preferred terrain is forested, with ponds, lakes, marshes or streams. Seems he/I was wrong. I would have thought they where a "family" unit, but drop it off somewhere else and all is out the window.

*snort* You guys crack me up... I have no use or tolerance for a wild animal invading my space, but I have also had ZERO use for a dead raccoon at this time. Death wasn't necessary in this case. He was relocated to a wilderness area that he'll probably enjoy, but should he decide to head my direction again...well...there's a LOT of Texas, several highways, two cities, a couple rivers, and the like between me and him. If he makes it, I'll buy him a beer, then introduce him to Mr. 45acp. I've eaten a LOT of odd things...used to HAVE to hunt rabbit/squirrel and the like just to survive (I'm a white male, if you're "starving poor" there ain't no help for ya)...but I've never had raccoon. Wasn't interested. I buy my meat at the store now. I know how...but necessity breeds contempt...nowadays I simply don't like to butcher things... There's a Chinese buffet I like a couple towns over...I suppose I could have dropped him off there... Coonskin caps are a bit warm for Texas...even in the winter. Took me a while to get to him (turned out to be a juvenile male) as I was working in Dallas when he was captured, and this was in a hot area, so he got a drink before his relocation... https://youtu.be/eJ1aEINAq_AHe was more polite and ready to be turned loose after that.

When there are a bunch of raccoons together, they're collectively called “ some raccoons.” Just as a group of crows is called a “ murder of crows”, a group of deer is called a “ herd of deer,” a group of raccoons is called “ some raccoons"

I didn't think so (not living here anyway), as they seem to keep a regular patrol schedule...twice a week around dusk...and if they had moved in I'd expect to see them more often... But ya never know...I'm actually unsure why they would keep coming by...there's no food or water accessible where they are able to get to...

You mite want to consider removing your post about relocating the coon. If a Game Warden happens to read it you may get a visit and a ticket. In the great state of Tennessee there is a law that says you can kill it, but you can not move it or relocate it. Check you state law. BELIEVE IT OR NOT.

I will back up Rainmaker on hi 18. I have caught approx 55 in town at my place in the last 3 yrs. 42 in 1 1/2 mo. I'll tell you right out do not 2nd guess those critters. They are not all nice when caught, they will tear your trap to hell, they will escape. I watched 2 escape and one hit the door with such force from the middle of the cage that it was like watching a magic trick, it was a fast hit and he was out. That coon had the balls to run around the corner of the building then come back to the before I got to the cage and he stood right up to show me how big he was. I've had to fortify 2 cages and toss one because it got to mangled. If you need to catch a coon use marshmallows the size you'd cook over a fire and nothing else. If they don't take the bait then they did not come around that night. I cannot explain the attraction but its like somebody that cannot live with out drugs. Squirrel's are easy, peanut butter they love, but be aware skunks will also go after peanut butter.

Clearly, it's all photoshopped an I never had a raccoon. Also I can't legally discharge a gun in the city limits and I don't want to do hand to hand combat with the thing...

That looks very similar to my traps. The trick is, the bait must be wedged into the floor trap/trigger, so force must be applied to get it out. Wary animals can be very delicate in taking the bait.
I wedged whole shell-on peanuts into the floor trap/trigger. If you want to add tuna or wet cat food for odor that's fine, but it's hard to wedge goop into the trigger.
