Here's the skinny...
43k miles
2 owner (he's had it 13 years)
Garage kept
Carb boots show no cracking
Jus' rebuilt carbs, jetted to go with
Mac 2 into 1's (has original exhaust in good condition)
Adjusted/shimmed valves 3k miles ago (has original shims)
Repainted factory blue 3 years ago with all new oem badges from Yamaha
Brake calipers have new o-ring seals
Undercut 2nd gear (only weak spot in these machines has been remedied)
Recovered seat
Says it's ready to go & pulls alittle harder than factory (which was reputed to be 11.78 s 1/4 mile)
Never down.
I'm goin' in the morn to check it out, thoughts/opinions/suggestions?
TIA cooldude

$1250 maximum if it purrs like a leopard and screams like a banshee over 3rd and 4th gears.
43000 is a medium approaching high mileage for those without a going over the pistons/valves/cams/crank, I feel.

JMencalice, thanks cooldude

Bighead, I'd hafta change the handlebars, needs more counter-steer!  (& I like the _itch bar 2funny)

Hook#3287, yeah she'd make one nasty "rip your arms out" cafe, 95hp coolsmiley
& it's a pretty straight forward conversion. Delete rear fender, plank seat, clubman bars, add oil cooler. That 8ball's even still runnin' the factory air box.

Yeah, I like it.  Nothing that can't be reversed is what I did on my Standard Bobber.

that god awful passenger back rest..

+1

The bike is from the American period that had those awful stepped seats trying to make a production bike look like an "Easy Rider" for the masses.

Where's the rest of the exhaust system?

That was what my very first street bike was, I bought mine for... I think $750? Back in 1998 or 1999...

They are screamers, I used to freak out the kids on their 600cc zip-splats, off the light it'd take 'em or at least keep up with 'em.

But the bike is so top heavy it don't handle real well, at least it didn't for me (Admittedly that was my learner bike though.)

Value wise hard to say, my valuation of them is 20 years old now, but air cooled, they don't go forever.

If he doesn't pipe up in this thread, might consider PM'ing Daniel Meyer too, I know he had one pre-Valk as well...

My first real hot motorcycle.  A '79 XS11 Midnight Special with a Windjammer front, bags, and trunk.
Fast.  Very fast for 1987 in my world, but handling was always in doubt at about 55-60 on our mountain curves; got heavy in the bars and some wobble developed with the stock suspension.
Scary fun sometimes.  Those early shaft drives and rear gears tended to get a bit torquey on that left side.
Oil cooler was a good addition as I figured it would give the inline a little more life over time.
Frankly, I'd prefer a chain driven cafe over a shaft drive for that reason alone, but that's only for me.

I think an XS11 would make a fine recreational cafe/boulevardier with some modifications to the suspension/steering.  If you can find one cheap as a project that isn't as pretty as this one with lower miles, well that may work out for you.  Tomorrow, my guess is that the guy is looking at getting $2500-3000 for what he's done to it.
The bike is 38 years old no matter how you shake it out and not yet a classic desirable; that's why my bid is low.

I would pass at 2500 all day long.  Like said, bike is over 30 years old and although decent mileage, is still 30+ years old.

I see the guys all the time asking 2500 (or more) for their 1983-1986 V65 magnas, and just shake my head NO.

Just because they are classic near cult like following bikes, does not mean they are worth that much.  I know back in 1989 when looking for a near new 800 mile v65 magna, I could pick one up for 3500 bucks, but did not have the dough back then to afford one.  To be asking 2500-3K even if in mint condition some 30 years later, will not be opening my wallet.

1500-1800 top end IMO if everything in good working condition with decent tires.

That would be a Honda ST1300. And they are selling cheap sometimes. I saw one running bike sell for $1200.

Of course I'm biased with 248,000 on mine.

Yeah, been lookin' at some st1300's, fjr1300's, gtr1400's, even a coupla Triumphs but they all look like it's gonna be a chore to get my 6'2" frame comfortable. Bad knees mean I hafta have highway pegs & they've gotta be pretty far forward to do me any good. I've jus' got this itch for something that corners lower than the Wing ever will. Guess I should save my pennies & go after what I really want, a "do it all" kinda ride, & with nothing more than a pipe & ECM reflash this thing will go over 100hp.

(course if I find a $1200 ST1300, I'll figure a way to get comfortable 2funny)

I also like highway pegs. I use them a lot. It's hard to see but my homemade pegs are folded back right along above the tipover wing covers.

yah, got my eyes on a st1300 as well.  Have seen a few very reasonably priced but never pulled the trigger.  Even some higher mileage fjr1300's (kid just bought one a few months ago mint 2005 only 17K miles is flawless for 4K) can be had for around that 3K mark.

I think the kawi concourse 1400 is fastest, but least comfy unless taller rider, then fjr1300 2nd comfiest and 2nd fastest, then the st1300 comfiest but slowest of the 3, but still fast enough for me for sure since all 3 will spank our Valkyries.

One somewhat local dealer had a 150K miles st1300 but still asking way too much over 3 grand, but then again, that is a stealership.

Ifn' I came across a $1200 ST1300 I'd probably add one right BACK into the stable! Just traded my 30k something mile ST1300 for a Valkyrie Interstate... LOVED the Zoom Zoom factor of the ST1300, but just couldn't make my 5'19" carcass comfortable on it for the long haul...
