I get a gasoline smell only when accelerating on my interstate. I pulled the tank the other day and air box and replaced all the fuel lines and clamps, tightened the screws on the intakes, checked for leaks around the petcock. Checked all the other tubing, including the ones that lead to the bottom of the bike, taped off the gas cap to see if that was the problem. I am baffled??

Do you tend to fill all the way up in the neck of the tank? Does this happen all the time or only after a fill up? When Tailgate Tommy followed me in 16 he said he smelled raw gasoline. Turns out the diaphragm was torn and I needed a cover set rebuild. RIDE SAFE.

maybe that is why I only get 30 avg mpg on my 98 tourer with 80K miles on it? I finally checked mpg today and easy riding where my I/S gets 35-36, this cobra exhaust with baffles removed (LOUD) with constant POPPING when off the gas or downshifting??? NOt sure is raw gas smell, but definitely a distinct odor unlike my much lower mileage stock I/S when getting off it riding.

I get that raw gas smell at all fuel tank levels, but like I said..only when accelerating.

It could be from the exhaust maybe running rich at full throttle or check the crank vent hose that goes to the air cleaner may be disconnected.

Try putting a gasket under you gas cap. I just bought some gasket material cut to fit no more smell.

I gave the front suspension a good hard pump up and down with a full tank for about 10 secs. I immediately smelled gas coming from the cap. I'm gonna sort that out tomorrow. Heading out Thursday for Leavenworth WA by way of Coeur D' Alene ID and Grand Coulee Dam and was not looking forward to that gas smell the whole 10 days of riding. Thanks Jack

Besides adding some extra rubber as gasket material (sistered on top the old), there is a post on here showing a guy bought a large O-ring that fit around the circular part of the cap that snaps down into the tank hole. Like a 2.5-3" O-ring. That looked like a nice easy fix.

For right now I am gonna find a large thin rubber washer/gasket as a "for now" fix and then sort it out proper when I get back from the ride...which might mean that washer?? Thanks

Bringing this old thread back up, I was having the same problem, I cut some gasket material out in a rough shape and it seems to be helping, but if there's a specific O-Ring that'd make for a neater fix, I'd be interested in the details, preferably without having to reinvent the wheel if anyone knows?
Thanks!
