After living in South Florida (Palm Beach County) for 35 years I decided a few years ago it was time to think about leaving. After many years of looking at property in western North Carolina I finally found a piece of property I really liked so I bought it. For those familiar with the area it's on Rt 28 between Robinsville and Bryson City about 3 miles east of Stecoah. It's 20 acres of woods, a stream going through it, gravel roads, and surrounded on 3 sides by National forest service. I am going to start building my house now and hope to be moving their next spring. I can't wait to get out of here!!!

Man that sounds great, really nice country, and great riding roads. I to just moved from Palm Beach county to north Florida just south of Valdosta Georgia. Lived down there since 1961, and the place has become a zoo.
Congrats on the future move.

I hope it's a mild winter so your time line isn't disrupted.

I left that swamp 22 years ago, my kids are 6th generation FL natives and the reason I left.  I return to the north-central part of the state to see family at least once a year and on occasion will traipse to Stuart to visit old friends if we can't meet north of O-ville. (Where Mickey's house is for those not familiar with cracker slang.) I do miss deep sea fishing but that was going bad long before I left. Kingfish, Wahoo, dolphin (not the mammal), cobia, snook, etc., all were overfished long before limits were placed.

Good luck in the new digs, I miss the Appalachians and would love to be at the York House in Mountain City, GA right now.

NEHI, my wife and I did the same thing. We both grew up in Palm Beach County, my family moved there in 1957 hers in 1959. It was a great place to grow up, intercostal 1 mile away beach 2 miles. Then in 1987 after witnessing how it had changed with growth and crack cocaine it was time to get out(paradise was gone). We left from Jupiter and moved to Murphy,N.C. in 1987 and it was like moving to another country with the mountains, waterfalls, beautiful lakes, friendly people and no traffic. I got my residential contractors license after being there a year and didn't have any trouble staying busy but I'm not a cold weather person and I had to work outside in the winter, I also have saltwater running through my veins. In 1997 we moved back but not to PBC. I was there in 2010 and it is a zoo. My wife and I were just saying we should look for a small place up there for the summer we sold a larger home up there in 2015. I think you made a great choice of area's to move to, fantastic roads to ride a motorcycle unlike PBC were it sucked in the 80's. if you need a good plumber try Smokey Mountain Plumbing, he lives in Granny Squirrel. Cool

Also don't expect anyone to work on your house during hunting season Grin Grin

Wish you all the best and with 20 acre's you will never run out of firewood  cooldude
