Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: August 23, 2018, 04:54:55 PM »

Dang! I just hate doing something dumb like that any time, but this close to a major road trip it’s really troubling… and, inexcusable! What’s even worse, many of the motel reservations for the next two weeks are in my name (inconvenient to alter), and other riders are depending upon me… Double dang! Nothing else to do but bite the bullet and soldier-on… even if wounded…

You’d think I’d know better than this. Yep, some simple warm-ups a few days prior, easing back into the flow of things rather than taking the big plunge all at once… it could easily have been avoided. Oh well, the deed is done, so nothing else to do but grin and bear it.

It caught me off-guard, see, and… well… I was in that certain frame of mind… you know the one. Filled with excitement and anticipation of things to come, being in the company of such fine folks, old music from the era of my misspent youth playing in the background…  Lots of facilitative, enabling factors creating all the ingredients for the perfect storm…

I seriously strained my imbiber muscle last night down at Jan’s Beach Grill… Jan, a friend of many years, owns the place, and she is definitely a beach person… no beach nearby Montgomery that I know of, and certainly none near her place (tman-403 would understand this). Still, it is decorated like something you’d expect to find Jimmy Buffet performing in, and a good time is always had… There-in lies the snare for the absent-minded sort… guys like this vintage wayfarer.

Sam arrived to pick me up within 10 minutes of the pre-arranged time. Practically punctual considering the traffic, and the fact he had to drive about 15 miles to get to me… All good so far. We waltzed right in to Jan’s, found a couple of vacant stools at the bar next to Jan and my realtor from my house sale two years ago. Dang! Cuz showed up a little later with his cousin Jack in tow, other locals well known to Sam, some even to me, were also present, so all the ingredients for some serious partyfying were in place… and that’s just what we proceeded to do.

Yeah, I know all about the importance of moderation, plus I also am aware that when one has been ‘on the sidelines’ for a good spell, it really pays to take it easy at first. ‘Knowing’ and ‘doing’ are not synonymous… and I proved that point again… Mercifully, I had only a short distance to ride today, and that did ease the post-party, morning-after discomfort considerably… If I can refrain from any more excesses between now and AOS Sunday morning, I just may get through this… I'm now convalescing in Centre, AL.

I may have to tie a string around my finger, though… or some other appendage… to remind me of my vulnerability, as another opportunity for boo-booery will arise Saturday evening… the very eve of our epic expedition.

SmokinJoe has invited me to join him for ‘a couple’, and those sorts of innocent seeming outings are always fraught with peril and heavily laden with snares for the unwary, injudicious, and occasionally reckless… again, like a certain bug-killer we know… I do need to be cautious… heck, maybe I shouldn’t even go!

Nah, that would be impolite… And besides, I rather enjoy hoisting a few with that dude… There is always fun going on whenever he is in the vicinity, and if any partying is occurring… he can be an absolute riot!!! I’d sure hate to miss out on any of that, so… Now I think I’d better go look for a bright, fluorescent piece of string…

Barry,

Yep! The other two were taken at Applebee's in Oak Ridge, TN. If there is a watering hole anywhere around, the smokey one will know about it!!! A certifiable party animal if ever there was one...

It is so very easy to strain that muscle when enjoying the company of good friends ....... and particularly when doing so while anticipating a lot more great fun and comradery in the immediate future.  Maybe that is what they mean by “having too much fun”.

Sounds like you are healing quickly.

Have a great ride to and around Colorado.   cooldude  And try to not strain that imbibber muscle too much...........just exercise it nicely.

DDT, a suggestion for where/how to tie a string for rememberance of stuff. As a youth, I wanted to belong to a club of jocks in high school but you had to undergo a certain "indoctrination"...an understatement to be sure. One such exercise involved tying a string to your manhood and run it up under your clothes and out of a buttonhole in your shirt....a small tag was attached that said "pull me."  Also attached at the other end in the nether region of the anatomy was a tiny bell, so when the string was pulled....your pants/jeans would jerk and the bell would jingle. The gals loved it and most weren't very gentle when yanking on the string. If you removed the string before classes were over for the day, you didn't make the grade. I became quite sore by noon and removed the string. When the club brought me before their officers, I was summarily dismissed for my infraction. It was then I asked how the president got in, saying he was such a pxxxy he had nothing to attach the string to. He came after me across the table, about halfway across the table his lights went out and I walked out....still a free and rather popular guy.  Grin

Side note: It was football season, I had just finished a second summer working on a haybaling crew. My job....hooking the bales as they came off the baler and stacking them five high on the flatrack wagon. The club president found out he wasn't ready for football season just yet....at least not as ready as I was.  Evil

Dennis,

Hey, you ain't fooling me! I knew you back when!!! You still manage to be the 'life of the party', only there is no 'straining' for you any more... It'll sure be good to share some road adventure with you again... starting day after tomorrow! Ride safe, and I'll see ya in the hills...

Jerry,

Oh yeah... I think I'm hearing the voice of experience whispering in my... eyeballs! Excess for sure, but never having too much fun! Yep... gonna have to be more aware of my limitations, I for sure don't want to miss out on any of the stuff upcoming!!! The ride out there will be awesome, but I can't let myself loose sight of all that awaits us once we arrive out yonder...

I know what you mean! Many of the lessons of life are 'painful', and the self-inflicted ones seem to hurt the worst. Not down-playing your advice here... but... I think I'll pass on your suggestion! No way I can see that that would NOT cause more than a little dsicomfort!!! Good story you told,  however... gotta be tough if ya wanna hang with the big boyz & girlz!

For sure!  I have overworked and injured that same muscle on many occasions.  There were a couple of periods in my life that I did that every few days.  It began to get too natural.......too routine.... too easy ....  to keep grabbing a fresh one and sucking it down.  I believe there is a very fine line between enjoying a few and becoming an alcoholic.  A line as thin as a thread from a spider’s web.  I have stepped on that thread and somehow managed to back away from that line.  I was very lucky.  I hear the other side of that line is not much fun.

I hope nobody takes that paragraph personally.  I certainly don’t mean to infer that anybody should change their ways.  My experience is just that, my experience.  Anyway, Bruce, your eyeballs were right.

You and the wild bunch are gonna have a super large time I am sure.  I am so envious!

Shortly after I got out of the service-1968-i started moving furniture-bed bugger-and learnin to drive semi. We did a lot of local-within 200 miles of Deerfield Il. which also took us into Wisconsin. One guy I worked with absofrikkinlutely LOVED his beer-after the trailer was loaded. We had loaded out the house somewhere in the woods in Wisconsin and when we piled back in the cab he looked at us and said-when I release the brakes and roll we WILL be at a bar in 10 minutes or less! I'd worked with him enough to Know NOT to take the bet! Bout a mile down the road he pulled into the place and the only thing givin it away was the small Old Style sign in the window. And I had to limit myself to one and one Only Old Style draft cuz I KNEW I'd be drivin back to the yard. Like I said-that guy Loved his beer!. Among his many attributes... he not only knows where all the watering holes are, he also does know where the bargain beverages are, too! Jerry,

Many of us have stepped up to that line, but not actually crossed it... I, too, have heard some sad tales from folks who have, and I'm glad I don't know firsthand! Your time for roaming and exploring the gypsy side of yourself is coming, and a little patience will get you there. You and Mural have made a plan that seems to work for y'all, so git 'er done, and I'll see ya down the road! First sweet tea is on me!!!

Dennis,

Yep, I've seen some of that type myself... They did serve as a role model of sorts, however, in showing enough of that life for me to know I didn't want to go there! No big deal not having a bunch that I've found... it's little more than a social lubricant to me, so one or two is plenty... well... with that occasional exception, don't ya know!!! Hey, I don't claim to be perfect or even consistent, ya know! Glad you like my use of the 'imbiber muscle'... Sometimes a word or phrase just pops into my thinker muscle, and... it then finds its way into one of my stories... It could happen again sometime, by the way...!

Ray,

Sound advice indeed! Only problem I see with it is... some of us are just plain prone to excess! I cop to that myself... on occasion. I do try to discipline myself, though, and mostly I'm successful... but I'm nowhere near perfect! I don't do much of the bad stuff alone, so at least so far, my friends have been able to protect me from myself...

Six stalwart, hardy, courageous riders have agreed to escort me out yonder, where a much larger crew awaits to pitch-in when required... Safety in numbers isn't always true, but in this case I think it will do nicely, and necessarily! In the meantime, it's on me to rein-in my own extravagances, and moderation is, of course, the key... Wish me luck! As always, I appreciate your perspective...

Terry,

Thanks! I thought about you and Iris day before yesterday... I was riding up AL 49 on my way north, and I rode that stretch where the bike chasing rooster made his charge at us!!! It was near Horseshoe Bend National Military Park...

I also remembered the park ranger who wanted to pull me over for over-zealous mobility as we exceeded the posted locomotion limitations... another vivid example of safety in numbers, I think!

Speaking of which, I heard last night, as I was practicing moderation to aid the recovery of my 'muscle', that yet another rider will be joining our crew! That makes eight now, and we ain't even gone KSU! Dang, who knew the ride to a ride could be so filled with opportunity for merriment! Like the rides to and from Cheaha we used to make...

Oh, and one other thing... Do you recall the time we stopped at the Huddle House (long closed now) in Union Springs, AL? The time the four ladies working there serenaded us with a rendition of "Mountain High'? Well, I told that story to Lucky 13, and offered it as just another example of how unexpected stuff can be so awesome! Thanks for your reply... and for all the memories conjured up as a result...

Reservations, Bruce Wood made reservations, What has the world came too?.
Joe called me last evening to confirm the WV vs TN football wager between Jane and Wimp. He said you were indulging with the cool kids, I hope you held off a little so as to not injure yourself again.
Ya'll be safe out there and have a good trip next couple weeks. See you at DRU or FCR.

Keith & Jane,

Yeah, I know… sort of surprised me too. Imagine how awkward I felt making those reservations! You might say I had serious reservations about making reservations, but... This close to a holiday and being in desirable tourist destinations, plus needing four rooms, all doubles... well it just seemed to make sense, so... I swallowed my pride and did the deed... I do NOT intend to make it a habit, however!!!

Yes, I did partake last evening with Joe and the cool kids... but moderately! I have learned my lesson... which should last another evening or two anyway... Tonight we're taking the evening off, and the only beverage I'm having... purely for medicinal purposes, of course... is a Dr Pepper... Hope my 'muscle' has recovered sufficiently for a long day in the saddle tomorrow...

Not sure about DRU just now, but I'm hopeful it may yet work out for me... I do figure to show-up in Robbinsville, though... Gotta get me a firepit fix, ya know! I'm also eager to hear of y'all's experience on your recent big ride!!! See ya soon... maybe even sooner...

Yes we both remember that rendition well Bruce.  I do believe those young ladies were using spoons for microphones. Smiley Howard and Pam were with us on one occasion, might have been the same one but Iris remembered that he had forgotten his cheater glasses and ordered from the pictures that he could see without them.  Grin
