I was asked to make a countertop for a kitchen island.  This one was made out of solid Oak (5/4 material).  The wife had a certain color in mind and man o man did she ever have that perfect color in mind.  It was close but not quite right the first time.  This time we got it just right, and I just put the final coat of polyurethane on.  Man was this a lot of work!

I don’t wet sand poly but lightly sanded between two medium coats seems to be enough. Thanks

What width boards did you use? Did you use biscuits or dowels as alignment for gluing? Good job!

The boards are around 6” wide. I made my own monster biscuits from 2” wide strips of 1/2” birch plywood running the whole length minus enough so the slots cut for them stayed captured so you can’t see them at the ends. Took half a gallon of glue.  Lol

Nice work!  cooldude

I like the figuring of the wood, and your placement of the boards in relation to each other. Well done.

Thank You Oil Burner, that placement is always a challenge, not only does the grain at each edge need to compliment each other the curve of the boards needs to alternate (up, down, up, down etc) and then of course there's the "good side" and "bad side" to deal with.  All in all I was very pleased as well.

Very nice work indeed. I love working with wood...I'm just not that great at it (yet). No problem with rough carpentry (building decks and such), but I just don't seem to have the patience to take the time to do the necessary steps for fine work like this....I'm envious.

Jeff, it looks really good, I'm impressed.
My best wood working is done at night, sitting around a fire pit with an adult beverage in hand.
Anything else I leave to the pros.

I think concrete would have looked better, tried to talk them into it.  They wanted oak.

When one of those big hanging pots comes down and dings the finish, they'll wish they had the concrete.

Thanks... I didn't mean to hijack, I was just having fun with the juxtaposition of
your highly skilled carpentry and the stuff I more or less make freehand with a
sawsall  coolsmiley

You did those with a Sawzall ?

I made them from 16 foot long two inch thick yellow pine boards from an
old cotton mill... I used a jigsaw on them, but that a lot of my stuff looks
hacked out with a sawzall is a pretty good characterization...
