http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/ct-ent-othea-loggan-0831-story.html

There was a story recently about an actor who had been "job shamed" for working at Trader Joes as a Bag boy. Along with this story it makes me realize as a society how judgemental we are about people holding low paying jobs. I have a lot of respect for this man after reading this story. Working in a grocery store most of my life there have been more than a few times I've been looked down on because of it. It has only bothered my in the fact that I can't say anything to customers who show disrespect for us. It is a shame that many people have never needed to work as a janitor, a buss boy, a hotel maid, or any of the other myriad bottom of the rung jobs out there. They would gain a little humanity from seeing that side of life.

I concur.

I worked some pretty hard and shitty jobs for small money.

Gas station....... 1.25hr

Guard (scarecrow).... minimum wage, 7 X 12hr days.

Babysitter............... $1hr

RA in the dorms.... free housing (no money), but divide that up into an hourly rate for being a full time babysitter/policeman/counselor/academic advisor for 40 to 70 guys 24 hours a day for a full school year. (And those guys were often drunk and disorderly and fighting and doing all manner of foolishness; like projecting old black and white stag movies like Rex the Wunderdog onto the roof of the dining commons in plain view of the 10 story girls freshman dorm) (my very first day as a sophomore RA I had an armed robbery on my floor).

My hat is always off to anyone who takes whatever job he can get (instead of seeking public assistance).  (unless you work for the IRS)

This man is an honorable man and a citizen who has probably contributed more to this country than he shall ever be given credit for; his devotion to his family, company, fellow employees, and customers show his worthiness.
The story is appropriate for the week of Labor Day (which used to stand for something other than a long weekend of BBQ & Beer).
God should bless the man who works with his hands and back; most built this country from ocean to ocean during it's greatest days.

That restaurant should erect a bronze statue in his honor before he goes to his just reward. Smiley

Addendum: And that video shows why people like Mr. Loggan absolutely, positively, and unconditionally deserve a $15/hour minimum wage.   He should get free public transportation from his employer or a higher wage for the two hours that it takes him to get to his job of 55 years.  Two trains and a bus; God bless'im.

Yeah I never understood those who would do that.

One of my first paying jobs was working for the school district as a janitor's assistant to the head custodian Mr Conklin, I think it was  junior year and my hours were 3-6 or whenever they wanted me to work @ 2.hr   You can probably imagine the "crap" that I had to do in that one and yeah I had to shower after work.  He worked that job well past the time he could retire, he just loved it

Have never belittled anyone their job, honest work deserves admiration in my book whether high or low salary.

You cant judge a book by its cover and cant judge the heart and soul of a man, or woman, by their job.

The man is a real winner. He works for a modest living. He is one in a million (or more).

First wife worked for American Hospital Supply. At the Christmas party , some people came to meet me as I was an unknown. Several who shook my hand cringed (I did not crush ) and one said "Oh, a commoner. I still had his hand and did crush it until he remembered to apologize.  After that , I stayed to myself. I guess some in sales think highly of themselves. I worked with my hands and brain.

yah,  some people tend to put their foot in their mouth as well.  Our supply chain higher up guy was chatting and he said these 'warehouse' workers are not too smart.  I said back in a shitty tone of voice, 'what do you think I am?'  He did not respond back knowing full well he put his foot in his mouth.  I''d like  to see HIM do my job for what little I make and all I do daily working 10+ hour days everyday since I know he makes well over 5-7 bucks more per hour than I do and takes off tons more work than I do.

I should have responded back my job would be a lot easier if supply chain would get their act together and order materials on a timely basis not needed it received in ASAP same day within the 1 hour it is received in and plan better for inventory mgmt. not ordering crap we do not need for 6 months from now being on the dock so soon.   One time supply chain ordered like 48 CASES needing ONLY 48 EACH's and had 1/2 the dock full of cases of crap we do not need for well over 8 months from now.  I should have had him label all of the each's in the case's once I received it in taking 1/2 the day or more... tickedoff

I find that most so called higher up jobs are highly overpaid for what little they do while the lower paying jobs that are much harder working are grossly underpaid for how much they do every single day over and over again.   A lot of that also has to do with not kissing ass to the higher ups as well which I will NEVER do EVER!!!
