Daniel's "Losing It" thread caused me to reflect upon my journey, so here it goes...

February of 2016, I was hospitalized and diagnosed with a hiatal hernia that had strangulated and required surgery to repair it.  After a 2 week stay in the hospital, I was sent home with some restrictions, but on my way to a full recovery (or so I thought)!

All was going great until January of 2017, when I had pneumonia.  There was a particular day that I coughed so incredibly hard, that it tore the repair completely loose!  At the time it was determined that was the cause of the intense pain, I was also diagnosed with blood clots in both of my lungs.  I was then hospitalized and a plan for my treatment was being considered.  After a few days on blood thinners, they decided to attempt a surgery laparoscopically to repair the hernia issue.  The doctor worked for 2 1/2 hours and was unable to complete the surgery and for fear of something going wrong and causing me to bleed internally, he abandoned the repair.  I spent 2 weeks in the hospital again, and this time was sent home knowing I would have to wait for the repair to be done.  UGH!  For the next three months, the days were incredibly difficult and I took my regimen of pain pills and blood thinners on a regular basis.  The surgery required could not be done until the blood clots were gone!

Following consults with 2 other surgeons, and selecting one to perform the surgery, I began my weight loss journey!  When the surgeon told me that any weight I could lose prior to the surgery would increase my chance of a successful surgery and lower the chance of this happening again, I was sold!  Let's do this!!!

Under the supervision of a physician, I began my journey which consisted of changing the way I eat, what I eat and taking control of my life!  I gave up sugar, pasta, bread, diet coke (which as my go to beverage for years!), as well as other foods, and began eating as I should...lean protein, veggies and some fruits.  I took vitamins and supplements and went in weekly for a B1, B6 and B12 injection!  At the time that I had the surgery in May, I was already down 40 pounds!  The recovery took a while as I had an open incision with 29 staples from my breastbone to my navel.  Even during my recovery, I stuck to my plan!

To date, I'm down a total of 104 pounds and feel better than I have felt in many, many years!  I reached my goal and have been maintaining!  I even joined a gym and go on a regular basis!  I enjoy working out now, as it no longer hurts!!  I can't say that I never have sugar, diet coke, or another treat, as occasionally, I do treat myself!  But the difference is that I know when to stop and can easily get myself back on track!  It has been a lifestyle change for me!

The picture below is October 2016 and July 2018.  When I look at the older pic, it is hard for me to believe that is really me!

Hey wonder woman, that is an incredible journey.  Thanks for sharing more details.  Life is stranger than fiction sometimes, I would never have dreamed of the adventure or three I have experienced as well.  You are one tough lady!

Amazing ! I remember doing a double take in the hotel hallway in Roanoke. I'm glad the surgery and all else has been successful.  cooldude

C O N G R A T S  on sheer determination. Weight loss is very difficult and keeping it off is harder. You deserve to be very proud of yourself. It is a life style that you choose.  It will also help with the knees not having to work so hard.

wow, that is super great news.  Sometimes I guess it takes a major battle to overcome to go on such a journey to loose so much weight.   You are looking awesome,  even HOT looking if I may say so!

As you said, it would be hard for me to give up my diet coke (one per day) though and other junk food I know I should NOT buy and eat.  I have lost 20lbs. and sort of feel slightly better with less weight, but not so sure another 50 lbs. is capable going back down to my college days some near 30 years ago?

Some of my clothes are sort of loose now (in the waist where I have the most weight loss) and fall down and even with the weight loss and tightening my belt even putting another hole in the belt, not so sure anyone wants to see my still big butt crack hanging out the back.... 2funny

Beautiful transformation....and such grit!  cooldude  I had been working on losing some of that subcutaneous crisco myself until our lives were interrupted a few months back. But, I've managed to not gain any back thankfully. We've finally hired a lady to come in twice a week for 3-4 hrs., thereby letting me get moving again.

Just had to go back and take another look, imagine how much longer Carl's arms are now. Wink

Amazing job (and hard work).  Way to go.  cooldude

That is certainly a beautiful butterfly transformation.  And that dress is something.

In the last 10 years, I've only gained 10-15lbs.  But I'm not working anywhere near as hard as you.   Smiley

Amazing report, it takes lots of effort and discipline to loose the extra weight and most importantly to keep it in check.

Wow another wonderful success story.  You are an inspiration.  You look more now like I remember you when Iris and I met you and Carl in Panama City many years ago.  I have never forgotten our first meeting in a restaurant where we walked in late and y'all got up and got extra chairs for us.

Losing weight is very hard to do.

You've worked very hard and you deserve to be proud of the results.

I'm sure that Carl is very "proud" as well.

Wow you look great!  The most important part is you feel good as well congratulations.

My wife has dropped about 50 lbs over the last 6 months,  it took hard work and the support from family and friends.  I'm very proud of her I know how hard it is to stick to it you should be proud of yourself as well!

Keep it up, or down in this case Smiley

A beautiful result for a pretty lady that took will power and a life change, congratulations on the new you.

I know you had Gods blessings as the blood clots could have had a disastrous result. You and Carl have sure had some interesting times in the last few years I guess there is still a plan since both of you are still here and in some ways better than ever.

Thank you for sharing your journey, Carl is a fortunate man.

Great outcome and quite a journey you've been on. Thanks for sharing, I wish you continued, ongoing success.

Shocked A Great accomplishment for sure. I met you at my first InZane 2016 Morgantown. Then when seeing you at Roanoke InZane I didn't recognize you so much.  uglystupid2 I pointed in your direction and asked Jeff, Chrisj  who is that with Carl? He brought me up to speed. I didn't know what you had been through with surgery and all but you sure turned things around. I bet you do feel Great, you look great and I wish you contiued strength and health.  coolsmiley

Congratulations on a hard road to take. You said it, a Life Change. Those little things that we change over 30 or so years, and then try to change in a year are so hard to do. Tess, my wife, had to go the more drastic way of stomach reduction surgery, but after losing a total of 70 pounds is feeling so much better, and like you, work outs/walking is no longer a pain to do.
