I ran my bike down pretty good on gas. Sometimes I do this just to make sure the reserve is working correctly. And sometimes it's just because I'm plain lazy. Anyway, I ended up putting about 16 miles on reserve and figured I better stop and fill up. I pull in and all 8 pumps are being used. I saw one guy ahead finish and get in his truck. As I was waiting to pull around the vehicle in front of me who was still pumping he backs out. I start to pull around and she takes off. I hit the brakes so as not to get hit by her and realize I'm right next to the hose now. I figure this is going to get ugly real quick and I'm trying to plot a way to exit out of there. There wasn't enough room to do a u-turn and I'm thinking I might need to just jump off the bike and run. Then the slack in the hose is gone and it just unsnapped from up top of the pump. Not a drop of gas was spilled, no damage to the car or the pump at all. It wasn't like in the movies at all ! It did make a fairly loud snap which caused the lady to realize what she had done and stop. She sheepishly gets out, removes the hose from her car, closes the gas lid and walks the hose over and coils it up by the pump.  Shocked Just as casual as could be. I think she might have done this before.  Smiley Now I'm thinking is she going to just take off ? I'm trying to memorize her license plate in case. But she pulls up to the Circle K and walks in, I assume and hope to tell them. And she did. All ended well, the worker came out and snapped it back together no worse for the wear.
By now I'm up at the pump I was originally headed for. The lady on the other side and I were discussing what had happened and how well everything ended up. Then I start to think about what would I have done had gas spewed everywhere ? I don't really know. It would have been difficult to abandon my bike.

Thank you to the inventor of that quick disconnect hose.  cooldude (I owe you a beer)

gas still flowing makes a mess, done it once myself years ago under age 19 or so.

but, was on the old 1978 buick skylark where the gas fill was underneath the SPRING loaded license plate in back middle of car.  I left the nozzle flowing clicker set to ON full throttle and walked away for a split second is all.  The spring on license plate snapped closed and somehow popped the nozzle out and kept running full throttle all over the rear trunk/windshield, etc. for several seconds until I could grab a hold of it and gas all over myself as well, NOT good!

I've seen cars drive off with the hose still in the tank three times.

None of them were male drivers.

One of them just kept on driving slowly out of sight with the hose dragging.

Wow, didn't realize they had quick disconnects and shutoff valves, that never happens on TV  Wink, There are usually signs on the pumps say not to get back in your car while you are pumping gas.

Sam's club fuel station. A guy on cell phone crazy2 smoking a cigarette crazy2 fueling his car. crazy2 Attendant just sits and watches. uglystupid2 I ask attendant why he did not act on the situation. I'm here to watch.  Roll Eyes
I approached the moron and made mention of the danger and he flipped me off. tickedoff
I went in and got the manager when I was done. Moron came to fuel as I was just about done.
My question was , "why do you pay someone to sit out by the pumps if they will not take  action on a danger situation". coolsmiley  State law dictates (largest word he knows) we have an attendant , is all he said.  uglystupid2
When I see the mushroom cloud west of my home , I'll  know he returned.

Happen to me.  Filling up a rental car in Phoenix, headed for the airport with travel worries on the mind.  Used credit card to buy gas and hopped in the car to take off.  SNAP!  Lady came out and said it happens frequently, don't worry about it.  I felt stupid, but who hasn't locked their keys in the car, or locked themselves out of the house.  Kind of the same thing.

Agreed, it could happen to anyone.

Just hopefully not on a bike.....that would be awkward.... Wink
