Don't worry, I was polite and stopped periodically in the twisties to let the GSX catch up...

So I had Monday off, federal holiday, and a buddy of mine that rides a GSX-1000, but almost never gets it out of town, and hasn't taken it on twisty roads before, has a shifted work schedule where he's off Sunday and Monday.

I had a cunning plan.

He liked the cunning plan.

So Monday morning we headed out from the Dallas area to Mena, Arkansas.

And up on to the Talimena Scenic Parkway.

It ain't the Rockies.

But it's mountains, twisty roads, and I can get there, ride the road, and be back home in Dallas in a single day.

The road, you can see how it intentionally crests the top of each mountain instead of going around them. It's no US129 or the Pig's Tail or The Demon's Foot Rub or whatever, but it's something, and it's close...

Major kudos to my buddy David, riding that thing for a 500 mile day, mostly back roads, I don't know that I could have done that!

He'd never been up there before, loved it, and I'm sure will be back.

We had lovely weather until the last 100 miles or so when the skies opened up, but we came prepared.

All you Caveman GPS folks will get a laugh at my expense - Somewhere outside Antlers Oklahoma my phone died. Fully 100% died. (As in even the authorized repair center can't fix it, they're having to send it it (5 days of warranty left, woot!)

So.... We got into Antlers, OK... And I had to go ask people at a gas station for directions to get back to Dallas.

I keep a physical map in my Standard, have ordered some for my commonly traveled states to keep in the Interstate now as well.

So anyway. Not the best ride report, most of the pics I took were lost when my phone died, but wanted to share that I at least got some twisty mountain roads this weekend, and that's something for us flatlanders!

It's not the bike, it's the rider's experiance / skill that makes mthe difference on the twisty stuff. Sounds like a good time was had.

Sounds like a great ride. We used to enjoy Talimena Drive during this time of year nearly annually to catch the Fall colors when I still lived out in western OK. It was always a crap shoot to make the jaunt hoping to see the colors a-pop'n. No real strategic turns to negotiate, just a nice leisurely cruise with scenery.  cooldude

Thanks for sharing, brought back some good memories.

Nice looking IS!

Keep them ride reports coming. My riding days are numbered for the year, was -7C(19F) for the ride to work this morning, so I’ll have to ride vicariously through you guys for the next few months.

Forgive me, but that would border on sacrilege 'round here 2funny

and if you're phone's got any storage space this... is a handy app, lets you download maps by state & use them offline. Most states run in the 400k/600k range cooldude
I love paper maps but good ones with fine detail are gettin' harder to find, this has been workin' well for me. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.here.app.maps&hl=en

That one's on my to do list, but it's not a comfy day trip from here.... And if I'm staying overnight somewhere for a ride, my compass usually heads to the Texas Hill Country.... but rt 23 is definitely on the list!

If it's any consolation we're supposed to have a cold snap next week here in The Republic, with high's in the 50's or low 60's! Time to break out the electric heated gear!

Yup, he normally just rides his bike around town, ripping through traffic with it. It's just not set up for travel. I did catch him giving longing looks at the saddle bags, trunk, drink holder, phone holder, back rest, foot rests, Mick-O pegs, etc. etc. etc on the Interstate... We might convert him eventually...

And I keep offline maps on my phone, but the problem was the phone physically died. Just riding along and then -BLIP- it was off, wouldn't come back on. Sent it off to Samsung to get it replaced most likely. I've got some simple folding laminated maps for the area states in my shopping cart at Amazon to toss into the saddlebags for just in cases in the future. Not the greatest detail, but should be enough to get me home at least.

And just because I wanna, here's a few pics from one of my first Talimena runs, I believe this would be 2001 or early 2002:

Heh, and it appears my Valk hit 10,000 miles the first time around on that trip...

See if you can find a TRUCKERS road atlas. The paper one cuz the plastic laminated stays flat wide open or closed on any state is one heavy sumbitch. Lotsa detail. Course I've been retired comin up 10 year but I'm guessin some of the old timers prefer plastic or paper over electronics cuz paper and plastic do NOT need batteries to operate!  Roll Eyes Pulled into a Flyin J NEEDING fuel and the stations puter was down. And I wuz in a hurry. And I had to wait right at 3 hours for fuel which caused me to miss my delivery on time.  Lips Sealed I keep rememberin the old couple in the Cadillac listening to their G P S and thatfinal instruction-dramatic left turn NOW!  2funny RIDE SAFE.
